First 30 minutes are free in FAI’s Short Term Parking

Short Term Parking at Fairbanks (Main terminal) sits directly next to the terminal doors, about a 1-minute walk to check-in and security. It shares the same physical lot as Long Term, but the short-term section is the signed zone in the rows closest to the building, and that zone bills at a daily max of $20.

The hook here is timing: the first 30 minutes cost $0, then you roll into hourly/daily charges up to that $20 cap. For true pickup or drop-off, it often makes more sense to park in short term, walk inside, and meet your passenger at baggage claim instead of circling the terminal loop.

Short Term has a 30-day maximum stay, so you technically can leave a car for several weeks if you’re fine paying the higher short-term rate instead of moving to Long Term. Locals generally do the math: once a trip gets past 1–2 days, Long Term’s lower daily max wins out, even though it’s the same lot and only a few rows farther from the Main terminal doors.

Rows in the short-term section have engine-heater electrical plug-ins, which matter in Fairbanks once temps start living below 0°F. Drivers who park for more than a couple of hours in January or February tend to hunt for a plug-in space rather than risk cold-soak issues at startup.

Handicapped spaces sit in the short-term zone closest to the Main terminal entrances, shaving the walk to under a minute for anyone with mobility limits. People meeting relatives with checked bags often use these spots to cut the distance between the car and baggage claim belt by several dozen yards.

One more local trick: during deep-winter cold snaps, some drivers use Short Term instead of the free cell-phone lot so they can wait inside the heated terminal for up to 30 minutes at no cost. If you’re doing that, set a timer on your phone the moment you pull through the gate so you don’t drift into paid time by accident.
