Cell Phone Lot

Waiting area

Free waiting beats paying for short‑term at FAI

The Cell Phone Lot at Fairbanks International Airport sits a short drive from the Main Terminal and gives drivers a free place to wait until their passenger is at the curb. You stay with your car, watch flight status on your phone, and roll up to arrivals on Airport Way only once they text that they’re outside.

This is a basic, outdoor lot with marked spaces and no time limit posted, unlike the paid short‑term parking directly in front of the Main Terminal. There’s no ticket machine, no gate arm, and no per‑hour fee here, so quick delays on Alaska Airlines or Delta arrivals don’t cost you anything while you sit tight.

The lot is meant strictly for active pick‑ups, not overnight parking, and airport rules still apply: engines off if you’re going to sit for more than a few minutes, and no unattended vehicles. It functions as a staging area for the arrivals curb about 0.2–0.3 miles away, so once your passenger has bags from baggage claim, you’re only a couple of minutes from the terminal doors.

There are no restrooms, no shelters, and no terminal-style services in the Cell Phone Lot, so plan around Fairbanks winter temperatures that can sit well below 0°F in January. If you think you’ll need a bathroom or coffee from the Main Terminal before pickup, do that first, then swing back to the lot while your passenger is taxiing to the gate.

Tip: Have your passenger text you only after they reach the public arrivals curb outside baggage claim in the Main Terminal; that timing usually gives you just enough minutes to drive over, loop once, and load up without circling security patrols more than necessary.
