Ocean Africa

Gate-side at King Shaka, Ocean Africa sells last-minute gifts

Ocean Africa sits airside at King Shaka International Airport (DUR), in the departures shopping strip after security. It leans into South African themes: think beaded keyrings under R50, wooden animal carvings from about R120, and patterned fabric tote bags hanging by the entrance. Stock turns over quickly around school holidays and long weekends, so sizes and colors can thin out by late afternoon.

The shop usually trades from around 06:00 until the final evening departures, so you can duck in even on early British Airways or Safair flights. Shelves mix generic souvenirs with Durban-specific items: shark and wave motifs, “KwaZulu-Natal” mugs, and fridge magnets marked “DUR” from roughly R40. Prices land above street markets in central Durban, but below the high-end duty-free fashion further down the concourse.

Ocean Africa focuses on small, packable pieces rather than bulky curios. You’ll see compact bowls, bracelet stands under 20 cm tall, tea towels, and sets of coasters bundled in fours. Food items are limited to wrapped sweets and chocolate; you won’t find biltong here, so plan on another shop if that’s on your list. Card payments are standard, and staff rarely blink at low-value tap transactions under R100.

If your gate is in the main international pier, you’re at most a 3–5 minute walk from Ocean Africa, even with a carry-on. Tip: grab your gifts here before heading to passport control for tight connections; smaller satellite gate areas at DUR often have only vending machines and one café with zero souvenir stock.
