Rp60,000–130,000 on Gojek GoCar beats most Bali airport taxis
GoCar on the Gojek app usually runs about Rp60,000–130,000 (roughly US$3–9) from DPS to Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu, and Reddit regulars say it often undercuts Grab by a bit. Rides take around 20–60 minutes depending on traffic on the By Pass Ngurah Rai and Sunset Road. The tradeoff: drivers don’t like picking up right at the International or Domestic terminal curbs because of airport taxi enforcement.
Wait times run about 5–15 minutes once you’re outside the official airport zone, compared with instant pickup at the terminal taxi counter but at higher fixed fares. One digital nomad reported paying about 70k from near DPS to Canggu by avoiding the on-airport taxis. If you’re landing in the evening bank around 18:00–21:00, assume the upper end of the 60-minute range to Canggu and Seminyak.
How to use Gojek GoCar from DPS
- 1. Get data: Buy a local SIM in the arrivals hall of the International or Domestic terminal or make sure your eSIM works; drivers often call or WhatsApp to coordinate pickup around DPS.
- 2. Leave the terminal zone: Walk 5–10 minutes away from the official taxi ranks outside International or Domestic arrivals; many people set the pin at a nearby gas station or mall access road rather than “airport.”
- 3. Open Gojek: Choose GoCar, set pickup to your off-airport point, and drop-off to Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu; you should see fares in the Rp60,000–130,000 range for those south Bali beach areas.
- 4. Confirm by chat or call: Because the DPS area map can be glitchy, expect a call within 1–2 minutes; send a quick WhatsApp pin or landmark like “Pertamina station on By Pass Ngurah Rai.”
- 5. Pay in-app or cash: Many visitors stick to card or GoPay in the app; if using cash, drivers usually have change for Rp100,000 notes on a Rp70,000 ride.
What regulars do and watch-outs
Frequent Bali visitors open both Gojek and Grab, compare fares within 30 seconds, and book whichever is cheaper from the same off-airport pin. Some also use GoRide (motorbike) for Rp10,000–20,000 as a first hop out of DPS, then switch to GoCar from a less policed street to dodge cancellations.
Biggest complaint: drivers cancel if you set pickup too close to the official taxi ranks at either terminal, since airport taxi reps may confront them. To avoid that, move your pin at least 300–500 meters away and send your driver a quick “I’ll meet you at [X]” on WhatsApp. One last tip: screenshot the agreed price before you ride so you can pull it up if data drops mid-trip.
