Gate-side handicrafts in Terminal 3

Right in Terminal 3’s departures area, Safari Souvenirs is the main stop for last-minute gifts before boarding at Julius Nyerere International Airport. It sits airside after security, so you can walk over from any T3 international gate in under 5 minutes. Expect shelves packed tight rather than a large showroom, with most items under about 40,000–80,000 TZS.

You’ll see the usual Tanzania hits: carved wooden animals, Maasai beadwork, printed kanga fabrics, fridge magnets, keychains, and small paintings. Prices lean tourist-side compared with downtown Dar es Salaam markets, but you’re paying for being a few minutes from the boarding queue in Terminal 3. Good small gifts land in the 10,000–30,000 TZS range; bigger carvings and framed art run higher.

Quality is mixed: the hand-carved ebony or teak pieces and heavier beadwork look better than the very light souvenir trinkets by the register. Check stitching on soft toys and look for solid weight on carvings before you spend 60,000 TZS or more. Anything fragile gets a basic wrap in paper or bubble wrap so it survives the walk back to gates like 5 or 6.

Payments are straightforward: the shop accepts Tanzanian shillings, most major cards, and often USD notes, which helps if you already cleared currency at Terminal 3’s forex desk. Stock rotates, but magnets, mini animal sets, and small beaded bracelets rarely run out, even on late-night departures after 22:00.

Tip: If you want space in the cabin bin, stick to pocket-sized items you can slide into a personal item instead of buying large carvings an hour before boarding from Terminal 3.
