Travelex

Next to security in T1, Travelex covers last-minute currency

Travelex at Cardiff Airport sits landside in Terminal 1, just before security, so you can sort cash before joining the queue. It focuses on major currencies like EUR and USD, but you’ll usually see GBP, EUR and USD rates posted clearly on the board by the counter. Opening hours track most departures, with the desk typically staffed from early-morning flights through the evening wave.

Rates at this T1 Travelex tend to be less sharp than online orders, and you’ll often pay a few extra pence per euro compared with pre-booking on the Travelex website. Card payment is accepted for both buying and selling currency, and they can also arrange buy-back on leftover notes. Minimum exchange amounts can apply on some currencies, so ask before you queue if you only need £20 worth.

This Travelex also runs ATMs around the terminal, useful if you just need GBP cash for UK taxis or parking machines. Airport ATM withdrawals usually carry higher fees or poorer exchange than bank ATMs in town, and the DCC “pay in your home currency” option on the screen almost always costs more. If you’re already in the UK and just need pounds, consider a normal bank ATM in Rhoose or central Cardiff instead.

Tip: pre-order online for collection at Cardiff T1 Travelex; same-branch pickup often locks in a better rate than walking up to the counter on the day.
