Rideshare

Uber rides from CPT usually come in 20–35% cheaper than meter taxis

Uber works at Cape Town International Airport for both the Domestic and International terminals, and it generally prices out well below the official airport taxis. You request via the standard Uber app, so you need mobile data or airport Wi‑Fi before you leave the terminal. Fares into the CBD often land in the R220–R350 range off‑peak, versus R350–R450 for many taxi quotes at CPT.

Arrivals at CPT sit on the ground floor below Departures, and that’s where you’ll meet your Uber. After baggage claim in either Domestic or International, walk straight out to the public pickup lanes in front of the terminal; your driver will usually message the exact row number. Rides typically take 20–30 minutes to the V&A Waterfront (about 20 km) in light traffic, and closer to 40–50 minutes in rush hour toward Claremont or the southern suburbs.

Pricing on UberX between the airport and the City Bowl often jumps at weekday peaks, roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:30, so watch the in‑app estimate; a normal R250 ride can spike toward R400+ under surge. If you’re heading further out, like Stellenbosch (about 35 km) or Somerset West (around 30 km), check that the fixed estimate makes sense before you confirm, as return demand for drivers can be thin and the app prices accordingly.

All pickups happen landside, so you don’t need to pass security again once you exit baggage claim in Domestic or International. You can pay Uber at CPT by card in‑app, which helps if you land with zero rand and don’t want to hit the ATM near International Arrivals. If you prefer a larger vehicle for extra luggage, toggle to UberXL; that usually adds 20–40% to the UberX price on the same CPT–CBD route.

Practical tip: order your Uber only after you step into the public arrivals area at CPT, then message your driver your exact column number in the pickup lane to avoid a 5‑minute game of "where are you" charges.
