Vat Refund

Final tax stop before departure in International Terminal

Vat Refund sits airside in Cape Town International’s International Terminal, after outbound passport control and security. This is the counter where non-resident visitors claim back South African VAT on eligible purchases made during their stay. Plan to be here at least 45–60 minutes before boarding if you have a lot of paperwork or high-value items.

You need original tax invoices showing VAT, usually for purchases over around R50 per item, plus your passport and boarding pass for an international flight. If you bought electronics, jewelry, or other expensive goods, keep them in your hand luggage: staff often ask to see the physical items before processing the refund. Purchases from Cape Town city stores and the airport’s own shops can all be submitted, as long as VAT is clearly listed.

Refunds here typically pay out in cash rand or via credit card, depending on amount and policy at the time. Small claims may be settled on the spot, while larger totals sometimes route to a later card credit, which can take several weeks to show. There’s usually no fee taken at the counter itself, but the refund operator may keep a small percentage as part of the scheme.

Lines spike in the evening bank of long-haul departures between about 18:00 and 22:00, especially before flights to Europe and the Middle East. If your gate is at the far end of the pier, allow at least 10–15 minutes to walk from Vat Refund to boarding. One practical move: keep all VAT-claim purchases and invoices in a single envelope so you can hand everything over in one go and get to your gate faster.
