African Eco

Gate-side in CPT’s departures, African Eco is the souvenir stop

African Eco sits airside in Cape Town International’s main departures area, after security for both Domestic and International flights, so you can shop with boarding pass in hand. It focuses on African-themed gifts: think locally patterned textiles, carved wooden animals, and beadwork you’ll actually fit into a carry-on. Prices on small items like keyrings or magnets usually start around R40–R60, with larger décor pieces and bowls running well over R300.

The shop leans hard into South African and broader African motifs, with shelves of giraffes, elephants, and rhinos carved from wood or stone, plus bright Shweshwe-style fabrics. You’ll also see bags, scarves, and some basic T‑shirts carrying “Cape Town” or “South Africa” prints. It’s less about high-end art-gallery pieces and more about mid-range souvenirs you can hand out to friends without blowing past R1,000 in five minutes.

Most passengers hit African Eco on the walk from security to the Domestic and International boarding gates, so it can feel busy in the 60 minutes before evening departures to Johannesburg and Europe. Stock turnover seems steady, which helps if you’re buying multiple similar items for a group. You won’t find food or wine here; this is purely gifts and décor, so pair it with a stop at duty free if you want biltong or local bottles.

Tip: do a quick lap of the store first, then pick one “hero” piece under a set budget in rand, and only then fill in smaller items so you don’t overspend in your last 20 minutes before boarding.
