Curbside taxis

Metered cabs line up outside the Main Terminal

Curbside taxi service at The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) runs from the arrivals sidewalk directly outside the Main Terminal baggage claim doors. You walk out past carousel 2 and the marked taxi stand is right at the curb, next to the rideshare pickup lane. Vehicles queue during all scheduled flight banks, with the steadiest presence from roughly 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Fares run on a meter, with most rides into downtown Cedar Rapids landing in the $18–$25 range, depending on traffic on I-380 and exact address. Drivers can usually quote a ballpark price to Marion, Coralville, or Iowa City before you get in. Ask about flat rates for longer runs, like a one-way trip to Iowa City (about 25 miles) or North Liberty (around 20 miles).

You can usually step into a cab within 5–10 minutes of exiting baggage claim, especially after the larger morning and evening arrivals. If no taxis are in the lane, use the airport courtesy phone near door 3 of the Main Terminal or call a local company directly; most quote a 10–20 minute response time to CID. Late-night arrivals after 11:00 p.m. sometimes require a phone call, since the stand may be empty between banks.

Most taxis accept both cash and cards, but some smaller operators still prefer cash and may set a $10 minimum on card charges. Always confirm card acceptance before departing the Main Terminal curb, and expect a standard 15–20% tip on top of the metered fare. Receipts are available on request, which helps if you need to expense a $22 downtown trip or a $40+ ride to Iowa City.

Step-by-step: using taxis at CID

  • 1. After landing, follow the “Baggage Claim / Ground Transportation” signs to the Main Terminal lower level.
  • 2. Pick up bags at carousel 1 or 2, then head toward exit doors 2 or 3 marked “Taxis / Rideshare.”
  • 3. Go to the signed taxi stand at the curb and join the line, if there is one.
  • 4. Confirm the driver’s estimated fare to your destination and ask if they take cards before loading bags.
  • 5. On arrival, pay the metered fare plus tip, then grab a printed or texted receipt for your records.

One practical tip: during winter, call a local taxi company as soon as you reach the gate so the cab arrives at the Main Terminal within your 10–15 minute wait for bags.
