No McDonald’s inside CHC T – you’ll need a car
First thing: there is no McDonald’s in Christchurch Airport Terminal T. Flyers on Reddit asking “where’s Maccas at CHC?” get told it’s Burger King only inside. If you’re airside looking for fries in a red box, it’s not happening.
Inside the terminal, fast food means Burger King near departures, plus a handful of cafes with cabinet food and coffee. Prices at BK run around NZD 8–15 for a burger or combo, so budget on standard airport markup. If you’re tight on time before a domestic flight, BK is your only big-chain burger option once you’ve cleared security.
The closest actual McDonald’s sites sit off‑airport around the Memorial Ave / Russley Road area, typically a 5–10 minute drive from the terminal forecourt in light traffic. That means a taxi or rideshare is required; walking it with luggage is a hassle and chews up at least 20–25 minutes each way.
If you land late into CHC, remember that many off‑airport fast‑food outlets around Russley Road (SH1) close around 10–11pm. You might be able to hit a 24‑hour drive‑thru, but check the hours on Maps before committing to the trip. With early‑morning departures before 06:00, you’ll usually be better off with terminal cafes opening around that time.
Watch out for the trap of assuming “every airport has Maccas.” CHC doesn’t. If your kids are set on Chicken McNuggets or you want a McCafe flat white, plan to eat before you arrive at the airport or grab it in town along SH1 on the way in.
Practical tip: if you’re being dropped off by car, aim for a stop at a nearby McDonald’s on Memorial Ave or Russley Road 20–30 minutes before check‑in opens; once you’re at the terminal, switching to BK is your quickest move.
