BMTA Airport Bus S1

Bus

Bus About 50–70 min to Khao San/old town depending on traffic 60 THB flat fare

60 THB gets you straight from Suvarnabhumi to Khao San

BMTA Airport Bus S1 runs from Suvarnabhumi’s Main terminal to Khao San Road and the Rattanakosin old town for a flat 60 THB, paid in cash on board. It’s the only public option that gives you a one-seat ride from the airport to the backpacker area without changing to the Airport Rail Link or MRT.

Typical trips run about 50–70 minutes to Khao San when traffic is reasonable, but riders report 70–90 minutes at rush hour as the bus slows down near the old town. The S1 uses the expressway for a big chunk of the route, so the first 25–30 km go fast and the slowdown happens mostly on the last stretch.

Buses usually come every 20–30 minutes during the day, with gaps over 30 minutes reported after about 22:00. Headways can bunch, so you might see two S1s within 10 minutes and then nothing for half an hour. Treat any printed timetable as aspirational, not a promise.

The S1 bay sits at the airport’s public bus area at Suvarnabhumi Main; look for the “S1 City Bus” sign rather than generic Thai-only boards that list other BMTA routes. Several TripAdvisor posts mention people accidentally boarding the wrong city bus here, so always confirm the big S1 marking on the windshield before you climb on.

Inside, it’s a standard Bangkok city bus with hard seats, standing room, and only limited luggage rack space, which fills quickly when a widebody long-haul dumps backpackers on the curb. Fare collectors walk the aisle and take your 60 THB; regulars carry 20s and 50s because staff may push back on 1,000 THB notes.

The route stops at several points around Rattanakosin, including spots near Khao San Road where a wrong stop can add a 10–15 minute walk with bags. Hardcore Khao San users sometimes ride one stop past the main nightlife block, then walk back along quieter streets to dodge the worst of the crowds and tuk-tuk noise.

Step-by-step from arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Main

  • 1. After clearing customs, head down to the ground level public transport area, following signs for Public Bus.
  • 2. Walk to the city bus stands and locate the bay signed “S1 Bus Khao San/Old Town”; ignore other numbered city buses.
  • 3. Join the S1 queue and keep your main bag close; have at least 60 THB in small bills ready.
  • 4. Board when the bus arrives, grab any luggage rack space first, then sit toward the front or middle if you plan to get off near Khao San.
  • 5. Pay the fare collector 60 THB per person when they reach your seat and keep the paper ticket until you get off.
  • 6. Watch Google Maps or a saved offline map; get off at the stop closest to your hostel to avoid an extra 10–15 minute walk.

One last tip: if your flight lands after about 22:00 and you just miss an S1, set a mental limit of a 30-minute wait; beyond that, a metered taxi may be worth the extra 250–300 THB for tired legs.
