Bangkok MRT via Phetchaburi connection

Metro

Metro About 20–25 min Airport–Makkasan by ARL plus 5–10 min walk to MRT Phetchaburi, then 5–15 min by MRT to inner city stations depending on destination ARL 15–45 THB + MRT fares starting around 16 THB

ARL to Makkasan plus MRT Phetchaburi is the Ratchada/Rama 9 play

From Main Terminal, the Airport Rail Link (ARL) runs about 20–25 minutes to Makkasan, then you walk 5–10 minutes outside to MRT Phetchaburi for another 5–15 minutes to inner-city stops like Rama 9, Thailand Cultural Centre, or Huai Khwang. This route makes sense if your hotel sits on the MRT Blue Line rather than BTS.

Tickets are separate: ARL costs roughly 15–45 THB depending on distance, and MRT fares start around 16 THB from Phetchaburi to central stations like Sukhumvit or Silom. You’ll buy a token or use a stored-value card at the ARL machines on the airport B1 level, then buy again at the MRT gates in Phetchaburi.

Trains run often enough that you rarely wait long: ARL departures are every 10–15 minutes into the evening, while the MRT Blue Line passes Phetchaburi about every 5 minutes at peak and around 7–10 minutes off-peak. Door-to-door airport to central MRT can land around 40–55 minutes once you factor in the outdoor walk and ticket lines.

How to ride it step by step

  • 1. From Suvarnabhumi arrivals, follow signs to “Airport Rail Link” on level B1; allow 5–10 minutes to walk from immigration exit to the ARL ticket hall.
  • 2. Buy an ARL token for Makkasan station (usually around 35–45 THB from the airport) at the vending machines or staffed counter, then head through the gates.
  • 3. Board any city-bound ARL train; they all stop at Makkasan, and the ride from the airport takes roughly 20–25 minutes with a few intermediate stops.
  • 4. At Makkasan, exit the ARL fare gates, then follow signs toward “MRT Phetchaburi,” expecting a 5–10 minute outdoor walk with stairs and sometimes escalators that may not be working.
  • 5. At the MRT station, buy a separate Blue Line ticket (tokens start around 16 THB) for your stop, such as Phra Ram 9, Thailand Cultural Centre, or Huai Khwang.
  • 6. Trains toward Tao Poon run roughly every 5 minutes in rush hour, and 7–10 minutes later at night; ride 1–5 stops depending on your destination, adding 5–15 minutes of train time.

What regulars do

People who know the route cut the walk between Makkasan and Phetchaburi to about 5 minutes by following office workers through shaded walkways instead of wandering at street level. Many frequent visitors with big checked bags, in the 20–25 kg range, skip this transfer and ride ARL to Phaya Thai instead, then swap to BTS or taxi to avoid stairs at Makkasan.

Late at night, when MRT headways stretch toward 10 minutes and last trains hover around midnight, some regulars use ARL to Makkasan or Phaya Thai then grab a 70–120 THB Grab/taxi for the final 3–5 km rather than risk missing the Blue Line. If your flight lands after 22:00, this hybrid plan starts to make sense.

Watch out for

Signage between ARL Makkasan and MRT Phetchaburi can be patchy, with some travelers losing 10–15 minutes wandering around road level looking for the MRT entrance. Reviews often mention the heat and humidity on this exposed link, and the fact that MRT platforms at Phetchaburi pack out in rush hour, making it tough to board with a 23 kg suitcase.

One last tip: if your hotel is anywhere near Phra Ram 9 or Thailand Cultural Centre and you land before 20:00, this connection keeps you off the crowded BTS Phaya Thai–Asok stretch; otherwise, compare the time and hassle against going straight to Phaya Thai and changing there.
