Every 20 minutes, X12 runs between Birmingham Airport and city
X12 is the direct bus linking Birmingham Airport Terminal 1 with Birmingham city centre and Solihull, running up to every 20 minutes during the day. It’s operated by National Express West Midlands and stops right outside the terminal at the main bus stands near the Arrivals area. This is the only regular numbered bus that runs both to central Birmingham and to Solihull from the airport on one route.
The X12 stop is on Coleshill Heath Road side of the airport campus, signed as services towards Birmingham and Solihull, about a 3–4 minute walk from the terminal doors. Buses usually run from early morning to late evening, with first departures around 04:30–05:00 and last trips typically after 23:00 on most days. Check the specific day’s timetable if you have a very early Ryanair or very late Jet2 flight from Terminal 1.
A single ticket on the X12 within the West Midlands fare zone usually sits in the £3–£4 range, and a day ticket is roughly £5–£6 depending on the product you pick on board. You pay the driver as you board using contactless bank cards, mobile pay, or cash in pounds; exact change speeds things up. If you’re doing a same‑day round trip into Birmingham New Street and back, the all‑day ticket often comes out cheaper than two singles.
From the airport, the X12 heads to Birmingham city centre via the NEC and then into Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham Coach Station/Digbeth in roughly 30–45 minutes, traffic depending. In the other direction, it runs to Solihull town centre in about 25–30 minutes from the airport. During off‑peak daytime, journey times sit closer to the lower end; in the evening rush between 16:00 and 18:30 it can easily add 10–15 minutes.
Stops are clearly marked with the route number X12 on the front of the bus and on the pole at the airport stand, and real‑time screens usually show the next departures with expected times in minutes. Luggage goes in the wheelchair/buggy bay or at your feet; there’s no separate underfloor hold. Most buses on this route have USB charging ports at some seats and CCTV, but Wi‑Fi availability can vary by vehicle.
One practical tip: if you’re landing between 07:30 and 09:00 on a weekday and heading for Birmingham New Street, build a 15–20 minute buffer on top of the timetabled X12 journey, as traffic around the A45 and into the city centre regularly slows buses in that window.
