Trains reach Birmingham New Street from BHX in about 12 minutes

Avanti West Coast runs mainline trains between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street, usually in under 15 minutes, with some services continuing to London Euston in about 1 hour 20 minutes. All airport rail access starts at Birmingham International station, which links to Terminal 1 via the free AirRail Link monorail in roughly 2 minutes.

The key detail: there is no rail platform at the terminal doors. You walk or take lifts/escalators up to the AirRail Link station in the terminal, ride the shuttle for about 400 meters to Birmingham International, then board Avanti West Coast. Trains on this route generally run every 20–30 minutes in the daytime, though evening and Sunday frequencies can drop, so check the timetable before you leave the check-in or arrivals hall.

Tickets on Avanti West Coast between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street can be cheap if you use an off-peak or advance fare, sometimes under £5 one-way, while walk-up Anytime tickets on longer-distance services to London or the North West can easily hit £50–£100. You can buy tickets from the machines by the AirRail Link exit at Birmingham International, the staffed ticket office on the station concourse, or via the Avanti West Coast app before you fly into BHX.

Trains use standard mainline platforms 1–5 at Birmingham International, with Avanti West Coast services clearly marked on the digital departure boards. If you are arriving into BHX on an early long-haul and want to reach central Birmingham quickly, aim for an Avanti West Coast service that is non-stop or has only one intermediate call, which keeps the station-to-station time at around 10–12 minutes.

Onboard Avanti West Coast, Standard Class between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street is usually more than enough for the short hop, with 2+2 seating and luggage racks at carriage ends, while First Class is mainly worth paying for on longer legs, like the full Birmingham International–London Euston run with journey times over an hour. Peak commuter departures into New Street around 07:30–09:00 can be busy, so keep your carry-on close and avoid boarding last minute with multiple large bags.

Practical tip: when you land, check real-time departures for “Birmingham International” and “Birmingham New Street” on your phone before you ride the AirRail Link; if you see an Avanti West Coast service in 10 minutes or less, walk straight from arrivals to the monorail and skip the coffee stop in Terminal 1.
