Trains into Birmingham city centre in about 10–15 minutes

CrossCountry runs through Birmingham International rail station, which sits next to Terminal 1 at BHX and is linked by the free Air-Rail monorail in about 2 minutes. Trains run most of the day, with typical daytime frequencies of every 10–30 minutes toward Birmingham New Street. You pay regular rail fares; there’s no airport surcharge tagged on just for using this stop.

From Birmingham International, CrossCountry services head west to Birmingham New Street in around 10–15 minutes and then onward toward cities like Manchester, Newcastle, and Bristol. Advance tickets on longer routes can be far cheaper than walk-up fares, sometimes under £20 if you book ahead for off-peak times. For BHX arrivals, walk-up anytime singles into Birmingham New Street usually sit in the low single digits of pounds on local operators, while CrossCountry longer-distance legs price higher.

Trains typically start before 06:00 and run until after 23:00, but last departures to further-flung places such as Newcastle or Plymouth can be much earlier in the evening. Check the specific CrossCountry service you need on the day; a 21:00 landing at BHX might still work for Birmingham New Street but miss the last leg north. Platforms at Birmingham International are numbered, with clear screens listing CrossCountry trains by time, destination, and calling points.

Buy tickets from the machines in the station concourse, at the staffed ticket office during opening hours, or via the CrossCountry app before you fly. Standard Class is the norm here; some longer-distance trains offer First Class with at-seat power sockets and quieter coaches. Expect onboard trolley service on many longer routes, though shorter hops to Birmingham New Street can feel like a quick metro ride with no time for extras.

One practical tip: if your flight out of Terminal 1 is tight, aim to be on a train into Birmingham International that arrives at least 90 minutes before departure, and add 10 extra minutes to cover the Air-Rail ride plus any short queues before security.
