Two-minute Air-Rail Link takes you from Terminal 1 to trains

Birmingham Airport’s Terminal 1 connects to Birmingham International Station via the free Air-Rail Link, a driverless shuttle that runs every few minutes and takes about 2 minutes end to end. The station sits next to the NEC and is the rail hub for direct services to Birmingham New Street, London Euston, Coventry, and other West Midlands stops.

The Air-Rail Link operates between the terminal building and the station from early morning into late evening, with typical gaps of a few minutes between shuttles. The platforms are on the upper level of the station, reachable by lifts and escalators from the shuttle exit, and the whole walk from airport arrivals to a train platform usually clocks in at around 10–15 minutes if you are not dawdling.

Avanti West Coast, West Midlands Railway, and CrossCountry all run through Birmingham International Station, giving you direct trains roughly every 10–20 minutes into Birmingham New Street, which is about 10 minutes away by rail. Fast Avanti services to London Euston can be as quick as 70–80 minutes, while regional West Midlands Railway trains cover shorter hops to places like Coventry in under 15 minutes.

Ticket machines and staffed ticket counters sit in the station concourse just after you come off the Air-Rail Link, and standard off-peak singles into Birmingham New Street often land in the £3–£6 range depending on time and operator. Contactless pay-as-you-go works on many local West Midlands Railway services to and from Birmingham International, but long-distance Avanti or CrossCountry tickets still need a paper or digital ticket bought in advance or at the station.

Trains run from early morning until late at night, with the last services towards Birmingham New Street and Coventry typically around 23:30–00:00, though exact times shift with the timetable. During weekday peaks, expect standing room on some commuter services between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street, especially around 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:30.

Step-by-step: Airport to Birmingham city centre by rail

  • 1. From Terminal 1 arrivals, follow signs for “Air-Rail Link / Birmingham International Station” for about 200–300 metres.
  • 2. Take the Air-Rail Link shuttle; the ride to the station is about 2 minutes and costs £0.
  • 3. At Birmingham International, follow signs down to the main concourse and use ticket machines or the staffed desk to buy a ticket to “Birmingham New Street.”
  • 4. Check the departure boards in the concourse for the next train to Birmingham New Street; trains usually run every 10–20 minutes.
  • 5. Go to the shown platform, board a West Midlands Railway, Avanti West Coast, or CrossCountry service, and stay on for the roughly 10-minute ride into Birmingham New Street.

One practical tip: if you land late and are cutting it close to the last trains around 23:30–00:00, head straight for the Air-Rail Link before stopping at ATMs, toilets, or shops, and buy your ticket at Birmingham International rather than in the terminal.
