BackWerk

Gate-side carbs in Terminal 1

BackWerk sits airside in Terminal 1 at BER and runs on a true grab-and-go model: self-service shelves, a counter for hot drinks, then pay and walk. Expect filled rolls, croissants, pastries, and simple hot snacks priced mostly in the €2–€6 range, so you can eat for under €10 easily. It feels closer to a German bakery chain than a café, and the 4.0-ish customer rating tracks with that: basic, predictable, not fancy.

Food skews cold: salami or cheese Brötchen, baguettes, and sandwiches are pre-made and wrapped, with some warm options like pretzels or small pizzas rotated through the hot case. Coffee comes from machines, usually under €3 for an espresso and around €3–€4 for a cappuccino or latte. It’s fine for a pre-boarding caffeine fix at 06:30, but if you care a lot about espresso, this won’t beat a specialty café in Berlin city.

BackWerk is in the Schengen part of Terminal 1, so it works well before short-haul flights on carriers like Lufthansa, Eurowings, and easyJet. Turnover is quick, and you can usually get in and out in under 10 minutes, even during morning banks around 07:00–09:00. Seating is limited; most people grab food and take it to the gate, so plan on eating at your seat if your flight leaves soon.

The main draw is price and predictability at BER, where many sit-down spots push mains above €15. Here, two filled rolls and a coffee often stay under €12, which matters if you’re feeding kids or killing time after a delayed flight. Soft drinks and bottled water sit close to supermarket prices, around €2–€3, so stock up before a longer leg.

Quick tip: if your gate is at the far end of Terminal 1’s pier, hit BackWerk before walking down; options near the last few Schengen gates thin out fast and often cost a euro or two more for similar snacks.
