Every intercity coach from BEG starts with a ride into Belgrade

Intercity Coach Services from Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) never leave directly from T1 or T2; long-distance buses only depart from Belgrade’s main bus station and a few city terminals. That means your trip to Novi Sad, Niš, Subotica, or smaller towns always runs as two legs: airport to city, then coach onward. Build the buffer.

From BEG, most budget travelers use bus A1 (about 400–500 RSD, 30–40 minutes) or city bus 72 (cheaper, usually 45–60 minutes) to reach central Belgrade before transferring. A1 ends at Slavija Square, while 72 stops at Zeleni Venac, roughly 600–800 meters from the main bus station. Both buses depart in front of arrivals, shared by T1 and T2.

For time-sensitive connections to intercity coaches, many regulars skip A1 and pay about 2,000–3,000 RSD for a taxi or CarGo directly from BEG to the main bus station. The ride usually takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic on the E-75 and Gazela bridge. Agree the fare or insist on the meter before leaving the airport taxi rank outside T1/T2.

Belgrade’s main bus station often feels crowded and disorganized, especially around the 16:00–19:00 peak when multiple lines to Novi Sad and Niš depart. Reddit reports mention buses leaving a couple of minutes early and platforms changing with limited English signage. Add at least a 30–45 minute margin between your planned airport arrival and the coach departure time.

Lines to Novi Sad can run every 30–60 minutes during the day, but weekend and holiday departures fill up fast. Many intercity veterans buy tickets online through Serbian operators or walk into the station ticket office 60–90 minutes before departure. Keep your passport handy; staff sometimes ask for ID when issuing named tickets.

Luggage on Serbian intercity coaches usually goes in the underfloor hold, with some companies charging a small fee of around 50–100 RSD per bag, payable in cash to the driver. Have coins or small notes ready so you’re not scrambling at the door while passengers queue behind you. Carry valuables and documents in a small backpack you keep on board.

Simple sequence that works: 1) Land at BEG T1/T2 and clear arrivals. 2) Decide bus vs taxi based on your coach time. 3) Ride A1 to Slavija or 72 to Zeleni Venac, or taxi directly to the bus station. 4) Buy or collect your intercity ticket and confirm the platform. 5) Be at the gate 10–15 minutes early and tag your luggage for the hold.

One tip: if your coach departure from Belgrade is fixed, plan to be in the city at least 1.5–2 hours before it; treat the airport-to-city leg as the part that can slip.
