Bank Branch

T2

T2’s main Bank Branch keeps cash handling inside security

This Bank Branch sits in Terminal T2, after security, so you can sort out cash without leaving the international departures flow. It’s useful if you land from a regional flight into T2 and need Ethiopian birr before a domestic connection or city taxi. Signage just says “Bank” near the main duty-free area in T2, so look for the counters rather than an ATM wall.

Hours in T2 tend to track long-haul banks of flights, roughly from early morning departures around 05:00 through late-night waves around 01:00, but off-peak gaps happen. Staff usually handle basic services: currency exchange for USD, EUR and a few regional currencies, plus simple over-the-counter transactions for local accounts. Expect airport-level spreads on exchange rates; better than some independent kiosks in town, still worse than an ATM withdrawal.

Card machines at Addis Ababa can flake out, so this T2 branch is a useful backup if you’re holding crisp USD 50 or 100 notes and want birr in smaller bills. Bring your passport; they ask for it on most exchanges above a low threshold, often around USD 100. Queues spike before late-night departures to Europe and the US, especially in T2 when multiple widebodies bank together.

ATMs in T2 sometimes run short of cash late at night, so don’t wait until a 23:50 boarding call to sort money. Use the Bank Branch during a longer layover in T2 and test your card with a small exchange first, then scale up once you’re happy with the rate and receipt details.
