Five major brands rent cars directly at Acapulco’s ACA airport

Terminal 1 at General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport has several on-airport agencies, typically including Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, and local Mexican brands with counters near arrivals. You pick up and drop off in the same airport lot, so there’s no shuttle ride and you’re usually in a car within 20–30 minutes of clearing customs.

Most desks in Terminal 1 sit just past baggage claim, so you see the logos as soon as you exit the single arrivals hall. Hours generally track flight banks, roughly 07:00–22:00 daily, but smaller local outfits may close earlier if the last evening arrival is delayed or canceled. If you land after 22:30, assume limited walk-up options and book ahead with a 24/7 brand if possible.

Rates for compact cars in Acapulco often advertise around US$10–20 per day, but full coverage insurance at the counter can easily double that to US$30–40 per day. Mexico liability insurance is mandatory, and many travelers find their credit card CDW doesn’t replace that. Build in time to read every line of the contract and confirm which coverage is included in the quoted MXN price.

The walk from the Terminal 1 arrivals hall to the rental car lot is usually under 5 minutes, all on airport property. Staff often ask for a printed or digital return flight confirmation plus your passport and a physical credit card. Some agencies pre-authorize several thousand MXN as a deposit, which can tie up card credit for 5–10 business days after drop-off.

Returning the car, you follow signs back to “Renta de autos” at the airport access road about 1–2 km from the main highway into Acapulco. Most companies suggest arriving 2–3 hours before an international flight and at least 90 minutes before a domestic one to allow for inspection, refueling, and the short walk back to Terminal 1 check-in counters.

Step-by-step from plane to rental car at ACA

  • 1. Land at ACA Terminal 1 and clear immigration; this can take 10–40 minutes depending on arrivals.
  • 2. Collect your bags from one of the baggage carousels, then walk 1–2 minutes into the public arrivals area.
  • 3. Find your rental car counter along the arrivals corridor; have passport, driver’s license, and credit card ready.
  • 4. Confirm the total daily price in MXN, including liability insurance and any toll tag fees, before signing the contract.
  • 5. Walk with the agent or follow signs 3–5 minutes to the rental lot beside the terminal access road.
  • 6. Inspect the car carefully, photograph any dents or scratches, and make sure fuel level and mileage match the form.
  • 7. On return, follow airport signs to the same “Renta de autos” lot 1–2 km before the terminal, get the car checked, and walk back to Terminal 1 departures.

One practical tip: fuel in Acapulco can be tight late at night, so top up at a PEMEX or BP station 5–10 km before the airport instead of gambling on a single station near ACA.
