Taxi

EgyptAir day-trippers rarely need it; overnight guests usually do

The Airport Taxi Rank at Abu Simbel Airport (T1) mainly serves people staying a night or two in Abu Simbel town, or anyone skipping the usual EgyptAir same-day temple turn. Taxis run the short 3–4 km hop into town and to most guesthouses along the lakefront. There’s no meter, so you agree a flat fare with the driver before leaving the terminal.

From the single T1 arrivals hall, the taxi line sits just outside the main exit doors, a walk of less than 100 meters from baggage claim. You’re landside, so once you step out, you’re already at the rank. There’s no app-based ride service presence here yet, so the rank is your only door-to-door option if your hotel doesn’t send a car.

Typical quoted fares run in the ballpark of EGP 100–150 for the short airport–town run, depending on time of day and how many people you’re loading in. Pay in Egyptian pounds; cards are not accepted and drivers seldom have change for large 200-pound notes. If you’re coming from Aswan and have small bills, keep at least EGP 50–100 aside just for this ride.

Step-by-step from plane to taxi usually takes under 20 minutes: (1) clear the single immigration desk if arriving from Cairo, (2) pick up bags from the one carousel, (3) exit into the public hall, (4) walk straight out the front doors, (5) head to the line of white taxis on your left and agree the price before your bag touches the trunk.

Taxis are most useful if you plan to stay in town and visit the Abu Simbel temples at sunrise or after the main 09:00–13:00 day-trip window. Drivers will also quote you a return run to the temples and back to your guesthouse, but most people walk or use hotel pickups for that short 2–3 km hop from town. For late-afternoon flights back to Aswan or Cairo, taxis usually appear around each arrival.

There’s very little competition at ABS, so fares don’t move much from driver to driver. If you want bargaining room, say a number 20–30 pounds lower than the first quote and settle somewhere in the middle. Final tip: arrange your return ride to the airport the moment you arrive at your guesthouse, and confirm the pickup time in writing on WhatsApp or a paper note.
