I spent eight years advising mid-tier US carriers on hub operations before I decided I’d rather write about airports than fix their boarding processes, and Frontier’s JFK situation is the most interesting terminal question at Kennedy right now. Not because the answer is complicated — it isn’t. Because the answer has a “for now” bolted onto it, and two things every other guide on the internet is quietly getting wrong.

Short answer: Frontier flies from JFK Terminal 7 — for now

Frontier operates out of Terminal 7 at JFK today, as of mid-2026. That’s not a guess — it’s straight off JFK’s own live terminal directory, which lists Frontier among Terminal 7’s airlines alongside Aer Lingus, All Nippon, Air Canada, and Norse. If you’re flying Frontier out of Kennedy this week, go to Terminal 7. Full stop.

Here’s the “for now.” Frontier has publicly committed to moving into JFK’s new Terminal 6 — but that building isn’t open yet, and (this is the part almost nobody is telling you) Frontier has gutted nearly its entire JFK schedule since the start of 2026. So the terminal answer is simple; the story underneath it is not. If you want the wider lay of the land first, I keep an honest map of JFK’s terminals close by.

Terminal 7: check-in, security, and gates

Terminal 7 is one of the smaller, older buildings at JFK, and for a Frontier departure that’s actually a mercy. You check in on the departure level — kiosks and counters — then clear security, and per JFK’s own Terminal 7 page the walk from the checkpoint to any gate in the building runs just 1 to 5 minutes. It’s a compact terminal. You are not going to lose your flight to a marathon concourse hike here.

Do your check-in online. Frontier’s app and website open check-in 24 hours before departure, and doing it there saves you money — Frontier charges an added fee for checking in at the airport counter, which is exactly the kind of ultra-low-cost gotcha the brochure copy skips. Counters generally open a few hours before the flight if you need one.

The two rules that actually matter are Frontier’s airline-wide cutoffs, and they apply at JFK like everywhere else: you must be checked in at least 60 minutes before departure, and at the gate at least 20 minutes before departure. Miss either and Frontier treats your ticket as a no-show cancellation. That’s not a suggestion; it’s the policy. If you’ve got TSA PreCheck, use the lane when it’s open — but honestly, at a terminal handling a single Frontier departure a day, the checkpoint is rarely your problem. Your problem is Van Wyck traffic getting you there.

Frontier shares Terminal 7 with a genuinely international mix — Air Canada, ANA (All Nippon), Aer Lingus, Condor, Kuwait Airways, Norse, and Icelandair among them — so the departures board will look far more worldly than Frontier’s one domestic route suggests.

Arrivals and baggage claim

Most of you searching this are departing, so I’ll keep it short. Frontier’s arrivals into Terminal 7 come in on the lower level, and since Frontier’s only remaining JFK flight is a domestic one from Atlanta, there’s no passport control in your way — you land, you walk to baggage claim, you’re out. Check the digital screens for your carousel. (Terminal 7’s international co-tenants do route through US customs first; Frontier travelers don’t.)

The Terminal 6 move: confirmed, but not live yet

Here’s where the outdated blog posts split into two camps: the ones that swear Frontier is still parked at Terminal 7 forever, and the ones that claim Terminal 6 has already opened. Both are wrong.

On March 7, 2025, JFK Millennium Partners and Frontier jointly announced that Frontier had selected Terminal 6 for its future JFK operations — the 13th airline to commit to the new building, joining a heavyweight list that includes JetBlue, Air Canada, Lufthansa, ANA, Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels, Condor, Kuwait, and Norse. On paper it’s a serious upgrade. Terminal 6 is a $4.2 billion, 1.2-million-square-foot project built in two phases, with the first six gates opening in 2026 and full completion expected by 2028. Finished, it will have 10 gates, nine of them widebody-capable, and it connects directly to Terminal 5 — which, if you’ve read JetBlue’s Terminal 5 gate guide at JFK, you’ll recognize as JetBlue’s home turf. Frontier’s own press materials promise a sub-5-minute average walk from the security checkpoint to any gate, plus 100,000 square feet of NYC-inspired dining, shopping, and lounges.

Now the part that matters for your actual trip: Terminal 6 is not open. JFK’s own Terminal 6 page still returns a 404, and JFK Millennium Partners’ project page still describes the opening in the future tense — “the first gates opening in 2026,” with the team “busy managing JFK Terminal 7” in the meantime — and gives no confirmed exact opening date. So until those gates physically open and Frontier physically moves, the correct answer to “what terminal is Frontier at JFK” stays Terminal 7. Don’t let a stray blog headline reroute you.

The bigger story: Frontier just gutted its JFK schedule

This is the part the terminal aggregators miss entirely, and it’s the thing I’d actually want to know before booking. Frontier’s JFK operation has cratered.

Rewind. Frontier only launched at JFK in June 2024 — its first-ever Kennedy flight was to San Juan, run in partnership with JMP at Terminal 7. Through spring 2025 it expanded fast: six daily flights to Atlanta, Orlando, Las Vegas, Tampa, and San Juan, then new nonstops to Miami, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Los Angeles, reaching as many as 10 routes at its peak. That’s the growth curve the Terminal 6 gate allocation was presumably built on.

Then it reversed. As The Points Guy reported in February 2026, Frontier announced it was cutting nine of those JFK routes — Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, San Juan, and Tampa — all phased out by April 2026. What’s left is a single daily nonstop from JFK, to Atlanta. Kayak’s schedule data still shows that Atlanta flight running about seven times a week in mid-2026, which lines up with “once a day” and nothing more.

Frontier’s stated reason is standard network recalibration — “market demand, seasonality, costs associated with operating from a particular airport,” the usual language. As Live and Let’s Fly noted, it’s part of a broader retrenchment after a $137 million net loss in 2025: exit unprofitable markets, slow capacity growth, and hand 24 leased A320s back to lessor AerCap. From my consulting years, that’s the classic playbook of a carrier that overreached and is pulling in its horns.

Which raises the obvious question, and SimpleFlying and other analysts have asked it out loud: does one daily flight to Atlanta justify Frontier holding scarce gate space in a brand-new $4.2 billion terminal? Terminal 6’s planning assumed sustained, multi-year throughput. A single departure a day does not fill that math. To be clear — there’s been no official word that Frontier has dropped its Terminal 6 commitment. But if you’re wondering why the move keeps slipping into the future, that’s the tension nobody at the ribbon-cutting wants to talk about.

Getting to Terminal 7 (and later, Terminal 6)

Ground logistics are the easy part. Taxis and rideshare pick up and drop off curbside on the departures level; JFK’s constant construction shuffles the exact ride-app spots around, so trust the signage and your app pin over any old blog map. The AirTrain is your friend for terminal-to-terminal moves and it’s free between terminals — you only pay the $8.75 single-ride fare when you enter or exit the system at the off-airport Jamaica or Howard Beach stations, and even that is capped at $43.50 across a rolling 30-day period. So if you’re connecting off, say, a Delta flight, you can ride over without spending a cent inside the airport — see Delta’s Terminal 4 setup at JFK if that’s your inbound. And here’s the future-proofing detail: whenever Terminal 6 does open, it connects directly to Terminal 5, so the eventual Frontier move keeps you in the same corner of the airport rather than the dreaded T1-to-T8 haul.

Frontier requires you to be checked in 60 minutes before departure and at the gate 20 minutes before, or your ticket is cancelled as a no-show. For a domestic Frontier flight out of a small terminal like T7, aim to arrive about two hours ahead — earlier if you’re checking a bag or traffic on the Van Wyck looks ugly.
