Locals hit Hikari before security at Queenstown Airport
About 5–7 minutes’ walk from the ZQN check-in desks, Hikari sits landside and feels more like a satellite of the downtown Queenstown chain than a classic airport restaurant. It’s outside security, so this is your last proper food stop before heading through screening to the small departures area. Think quick Japanese takeaway first, sit-down second.
Hikari runs mainly on a cabinet of pre-made sushi packs, with typical boxes of salmon, tuna, and mixed rolls usually landing in the NZ$12–18 range. You’ll often see standard options like salmon nigiri, teriyaki chicken rolls, and avocado cucumber maki lined up in plastic clamshells. Hot food is limited; if you’re after a full cooked meal, downtown Queenstown two kilometres away has the bigger Hikari sites.
Seating is minimal and basic, with just a few tables that fill fast during the morning and early afternoon bank of flights between about 9:00 and 14:00. Most people grab a pack, pay at the counter, and eat in the main terminal seating area near the check-in zone. Don’t plan a long sit-down here before an 07:00 departure; better to treat it as a takeaway stop and move on.
Food quality tracks with the chain’s town locations: rice reasonably fresh by airport standards, fish okay for a regional airport 8 hours’ drive from Christchurch, and portions decent for the price. Expect standard soy, wasabi, and pickled ginger sachets in each box, which helps if you’re carrying everything onto a Jetstar or Air New Zealand flight with no free meal.
Tip: buy your sushi at Hikari before you check luggage and head to screening; once you’re airside at ZQN, food options shrink and prices often jump by a few extra dollars for similar snacks.
