Free EV charging, but you still pay $30 a day to park

The EV Charging bays sit directly in front of Queenstown Airport’s terminal, about a 1‑minute walk from check‑in. You pay the standard terminal parking rate (currently around $30 per day), but the electricity itself is free while you’re plugged in. For short stays of a few hours, that tradeoff often beats hunting for cheaper off‑airport charge options.

There are six Tesla Destination Chargers in this section, marked for EV use only. The airport notes they work with Tesla vehicles plus any car that has a Type 2 socket or the right adapter, so Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes and other Type 2‑equipped models are usually fine. If you drive CCS2 only and don’t have a Type 2 adapter, this spot is not for you.

Indicative charge speed is listed at up to 100 km of range per hour, depending on your car. In practice, that’s enough to top up for a return run to Wanaka or even Te Anau during a 3–4 hour stay. For a quick pickup or drop‑off, 60–90 minutes can still add a useful buffer before heading into Central Otago’s longer stretches without fast chargers.

This EV section counts as accessible parking with flat, short access to the terminal doors, which helps if you’re wrangling bags or kids. Because spaces are limited to six, treat them as first‑come, first‑served; there’s no booking system and no dedicated overflow EV area. If all six are taken, you fall back to standard terminal parking at the same $30 daily rate, just without the plug.

Tip: Plan your stay length carefully: use these bays to grab 2–4 hours of free charging at the normal terminal rate, then move to cheaper long‑term parking or another charger once you’ve banked the range you need.
