You pay more than the Airport Express bus, but you get door-to-door drop-off in suburbs that sit awkwardly between bus routes.

Every licensed taxi here runs on a meter, and fares into the city often fall around $50 NZD in normal daytime traffic. You’ll see multiple companies in the rank outside arrivals, so you can pick the first cab in line rather than hunting online. If you’re heading further out to suburbs like Johnsonville or the eastern hills, expect the fare to climb past $60 NZD as distance and time build.

Most drivers accept EFTPOS and major cards, and some also take contactless and mobile wallets, but keep a $20 note handy in case a specific taxi’s terminal is offline. Late at night, when the Airport Express drops to lower frequencies, taxis become the default for arrivals off the last bank of flights around 23:00. That late-hour flexibility matters if you’re hauling two 23 kg checked bags plus ski gear or camping kits.

Shared shuttles also operate from outside the terminal, typically charging a lower per-person fare than a solo taxi if you’re alone, but they get slower once they add two or three extra stops. If the city run is 20–30 minutes direct by taxi, a shuttle doing multiple hotel drops can stretch closer to 40 minutes. For a couple or small group splitting a $40–60 NZD cab, the price gap between shuttle and taxi often shrinks.

Practical tip: Before you get in, ask the driver for a rough fare range to your exact street, then grab a photo of the cab’s door logo and number; it helps if you leave something in the back seat after that 30-minute airport ride.
