Terminal A

10 airlines 31 restaurants 32 shops

Terminal A hosts 10 airlines. It's LOT Polish Airlines's home turf at WAW. You'll find 31 dining options, 32 shops here.

One terminal, two eras: Terminal A is both “1” and “2”

All flights at Warsaw Chopin use Terminal A, even if your ticket says Terminal 1 or 2. It is one long building split into an older section and a newer section, with LOT, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Emirates, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Turkish Airlines all departing from here. If in doubt, just follow signs for “Terminal A – Departures” and ignore the legacy terminal numbers on your boarding pass.

Layout: Schengen vs non‑Schengen in one connected building

Security in Terminal A splits traffic into Schengen and non‑Schengen piers, but you stay inside the same structure. The newer part of A feels more modern, while reviewers still call the old section “not in such a good shape” and waiting on refurbishment. Walking from one end to the other takes around 10–15 minutes at a normal pace, so tight connections can feel longer if your inbound and outbound gates sit at opposite sides.

Lounges: four total, three Schengen, one non‑Schengen

Frequent flyers talk about four lounges in Terminal A: three in the Schengen zone and one in non‑Schengen. LOT’s Polonez is the main status/business space and treated as “out of bounds” for oneworld elites, while Preludium and Fantazja take Priority Pass and paid entry. Polonez usually serves LOT and Star Alliance business, and BA flyers often end up in one of the third‑party lounges instead.

Preludium and Fantazja: Priority Pass and paid entry

Preludium Executive Lounge sits on level 0 near gates 34–35 in the Schengen area and is used as a quieter work corner with showers away from the main concourse. Both Preludium and Fantazja reportedly sell walk‑up access for about PLN 130 and accept Priority Pass, so regulars sometimes treat them as overflow seating when nearby gate rows are packed. One BA traveler skipped the better LOT lounge simply because the walk and backtracking felt too risky before boarding.

Crowding patterns: AF/KL wave and tired older side

Fantazja gets rough reviews during the afternoon Air France/KLM bank, with one FlyerTalk user calling it an “absolute zoo” and struggling to find a single free seat or stool. That crowd spills into nearby Schengen gates when several AF/KL flights depart close together, so standing room only around those departures is common. At the same time, Skytrax reviews keep pointing out the quality gap between the newer part of Terminal A and the older wing, which still looks worn in 2020s reports.

Food and coffee: McDonald’s, Subway, PAUL and local quick bites

On the food side, Terminal A mixes chains and Polish fast options: McDonald’s, Subway, PAUL, Costa Coffee, Espressamente illy, Bistro Okienko, Misa, Bijanka, 1 Minute Smacznego!, Atmosphere, Atmosphere Bistro and Cavarious. Prices for a basic sandwich at PAUL or Costa sit in the 20–30 PLN band, while a full McDonald’s combo usually lands under 30–35 PLN. 1 Minute Smacznego! and Bistro Okienko work for fast Polish‑style snacks if you want something local before boarding.

Shopping: Aelia vs Baltona duty free and quick‑grab essentials

Duty free in Terminal A is split between Aelia Duty Free and Baltona Duty Free, with wines and spirits often a bit cheaper in PLN than in eurozone airports. For beauty there is Aelia Beauty, while Baltona La Maison Du Luxe carries higher‑end brands. Convenience and newsstand needs are covered by Relay, 1 Minute, Drugstore, Gift Shop, Zoom, Polana and Virgin, enough to grab toiletries or a paperback in under 10 minutes between security and boarding.

What regulars actually do

TripAdvisor regulars tell first‑timers to ignore any “Terminal 1/2” note and just budget time for Terminal A queues and the walk to their gate. Frequent flyers with Priority Pass pick Preludium or Fantazja based on which side their flight uses, and some time their visit before the AF/KL afternoon wave to dodge the crush. A couple of BA regulars even say they skip the lounge entirely and sit in quieter gate rows farther from the lounge cluster when they need laptop space.

One practical tip

If your boarding pass says Terminal 1 or 2, still plan your arrival around Terminal A Departures and add 10–15 minutes for the post‑security walk, especially if your flight with LOT, BA or Emirates boards from gates deep in the newer pier or beyond gate 30.
