Intercity bus

15–20 minutes from T1 gets you to real intercity coaches

Intercity Coach Stand at Vilnius Airport is a misnomer: long‑distance buses to Kaunas, Klaipėda, Riga and other cities actually leave from Vilnius bus station near the train station, roughly 5 km from T1. At the terminal you only get city buses, trains, and taxis, so treat the airport–station hop as a separate first leg of your trip.

City buses 1 and 2 run from the stop just outside T1 to Vilnius bus station in around 15–20 minutes, with tickets around €1 bought from the driver or kiosk. One Reddit regular described landing at VNO, catching bus 1, and making a Kaunas coach without drama because they kept the connection simple and cheap.

The airport railway stop sits about 500–600 meters from T1, linked by a signed path, and trains take roughly 7 minutes to reach Vilnius railway station, which is next door to the bus station. Some frequent flyers prefer the train over bus 1 or 2 because the timetable is more reliable in rush‑hour traffic, even if the walk adds 5–10 minutes.

There is no through‑ticketing between flight, airport transport, and your intercity coach, so you buy separate tickets for the airport bus/train and for the onward coach at Vilnius bus station. That lack of integration is why TripAdvisor users complain about expecting a proper intercity stand at the terminal and instead finding only local options that add a step and a bit of stress.

Regulars build at least 45–60 minutes between scheduled landing at VNO and their coach departure from Vilnius bus station, and in winter they often pad that to 90 minutes to allow for de‑icing or slow baggage. A self‑planned 30‑minute dash looks tempting on paper, but one delay in baggage claim or a 15‑minute gap in bus 1/2 service can easily kill that margin.

How to connect from T1 to your intercity coach

  • 1. On approach, check your gate and actual landing time in T1 and mentally add 20–30 minutes for taxi, deplaning, and baggage.
  • 2. Exit arrivals at T1 and walk to the city bus stop directly in front of the terminal or follow signs 500–600 m to the airport railway stop.
  • 3. Buy a bus ticket (about €1) from the driver or kiosk, or a train ticket at the machine or counter, and ride to the Vilnius railway/bus station area, 7–20 minutes away.
  • 4. At Vilnius bus station, find your coach operator’s platform number on the departure boards and be there at least 10 minutes before the stated time.
  • 5. If your flight runs late and you miss the planned coach, most Kaunas and Klaipėda routes have later departures the same day, but you’ll pay change fees or buy a new ticket at the station counters.

One practical tip: book an intercity coach that leaves at least one full hour after your scheduled arrival at VNO, then aim to be on bus 1/2 or the airport train within 20–25 minutes of stepping into the arrivals hall.
