20–30 minutes from TUN to central Tunis if traffic behaves

Yellow metered Airport Taxis line up outside Terminal 1 arrivals at Tunis Carthage (TUN) and give you the fastest door-to-door run into central Tunis, La Marsa, Carthage or Sidi Bou Said. In light traffic, rides into town sit around 20–30 minutes and usually land in the €15–€25 range, with traffic spikes around 09:00 and 17:00 stretching that toward 45 minutes for La Marsa or Sidi Bou Said.

How it works step by step

  • 1. Exit arrivals in Terminal 1. After customs, walk straight out of the main doors; ignore anyone inside the hall offering a “taxi” and head to the marked taxi rank about 50–100 meters ahead.
  • 2. Join the official taxi line. Look for the yellow taxis with rooftop meters and taxi signs. Skip unmarked cars and guys quoting prices like “30 euros to downtown” before you even reach the rank.
  • 3. Agree meter and currency before you sit. Say “compteur, s’il vous plaît” or “bil compteur” and confirm you will pay in Tunisian dinars, not euros. Typical metered rides into central Tunis run around 20–30 TND; La Marsa or Sidi Bou Said come in higher but still well under €25 off-peak.
  • 4. Load bags and keep small notes handy. Some drivers at TUN try to tack on informal luggage surcharges per suitcase. Having 10s and 20s in dinars ready keeps the argument short if someone suddenly invents a 5 TND per bag fee at drop-off.
  • 5. Watch the meter during the ride. The trip into town usually takes 20–30 minutes at night and up to 45 minutes in rush hour. If the driver flips the meter off and starts quoting a new “special” price mid-ride, push back or ask to stop in a busy area.
  • 6. Pay in dinars and get out first. Pay the metered amount plus a small round-up (for example from 18 to 20 TND). Step out with your bags before you hand over cash so you’re not debating extras with your luggage still in the trunk.

What regulars do

FlyerTalk and Reddit regulars say they walk straight past the first row of touts, line up at the official rank, and insist on the meter in French or basic Arabic before they close the door. Many check recent reports that central Tunis usually lands around 20–30 TND and are ready to walk away if someone opens with 30 euros. The simple rule: meter on, pay in dinars, and avoid peak 09:00 and 17:00 if you can.

Watch out for

Common complaints at TUN: drivers refusing the meter, quotes of 25–30 euros for rides that locals do for under 30 TND, and minor “luggage fee” games at the curb. You may also get steered toward “private cars” inside the terminal, often at double taxi money. If a driver won’t use the meter, just step out and take the next one in line.

One last tip

Pull 40–50 TND from the airport ATM in arrivals before you exit; that easily covers a metered ride into central Tunis plus a small tip and saves you from overpaying in euros at a bad curbside rate.
