Intercity Coach to Taichung

Coach

Coach 2-3 hr TPE–Taichung $10-15

2–3 hour, one-seat ride beats an HSR transfer hassle

Intercity coaches from TPE to Taichung run roughly every 20–40 minutes from both T1 and T2 and cost about US$10–15 per person. Multiple operators run this route, including Ubus and Kuo-Kuang, and the key upside is simple: you board once at the airport and get off in Taichung without changing at Taoyuan HSR.

Coaches usually take 2–2.5 hours, but Reddit reports of close to 3 hours on holiday weekends mean you don’t use this on a tight schedule. Traffic on the freeway is the main variable, and Friday nights plus Sunday afternoons get called out as the worst. If you have a flight check-in deadline in Taichung’s direction, build at least a 1-hour buffer.

Buses depart from the airport bus area on the ground level of T1 and T2; follow signs marked “Bus to Taichung” and look for counters showing Ubus and Kuo-Kuang route numbers. You can usually buy a ticket at these counters in cash or card, and some lines accept EasyCard directly at the platform, but seat reservation rules differ by company.

Interior setup is standard intercity style with reclining seats, overhead racks, and an onboard toilet on most vehicles; several riders mention the AC runs cold, so a light jacket helps on a 2–3 hour ride. Fares around NT$300–450 (about US$10–15) undercut the HSR combo of airport MRT plus Taoyuan–Taichung ticket, especially for families or groups of three or more.

Big thing to check before you buy: each operator uses different Taichung stops, ranging from Chaoma station to near Taichung Railway Station and other city terminals. One Reddit user notes the airport bus dropped them much closer to their Taichung hotel than the HSR would have. Pull up your hotel on Google Maps and confirm which company’s stop (and stop name) is easiest.

Watch out for limited luggage space on busy weekends and around major holidays like Lunar New Year, when some coaches leave nearly full from TPE. Another recurring complaint: announcements can be Chinese-only, so have offline maps ready and track location with GPS so you don’t miss your Taichung stop.

Step-by-step from arrival to Taichung coach

  • 1. After landing in T1 or T2, clear immigration and customs; expect 30–60 minutes depending on queues.
  • 2. Follow signs to the “Bus” area on the arrivals (ground) floor; in T1 and T2 this is one level below arrivals hall.
  • 3. At the bus ticket counters, ask for Taichung and compare Ubus vs Kuo-Kuang stops; pick the one closest to your hotel by stop name.
  • 4. Buy a ticket (around NT$300–450) or confirm if that route accepts EasyCard tap-on at the platform.
  • 5. Go to the assigned platform number, usually printed on your ticket or shown on screens, and queue for the next Taichung departure.
  • 6. Stow large bags in the underfloor compartment, keep valuables in a small bag at your seat, and bring a jacket in case the AC is strong.
  • 7. Track progress to your Taichung stop with Google Maps or another GPS app, since some drivers only call stops in Chinese, then get off at your chosen terminal and connect by taxi or local bus.

One practical tip: if you’re returning TPE–Taichung–TPE, buy a round-trip at the Taichung terminal on arrival there, so your preferred time back to the airport doesn’t sell out on busy days.
