EV Chargers

Level 2 and DC fast chargers are scarce on both TIJ and CBX sides

EV charging at General Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport (TIJ) and the CBX terminal is thin enough that regulars tell people to plan as if there are no reliable on-site chargers. The official TIJ parking next to the Main Terminal and the CBX parking decks on the US side sit right by the buildings, but Reddit reports from 2021–2024 say drivers rarely see clearly marked EV stalls or working equipment.

Most cross‑border travelers from California top up at public DC fast chargers in Chula Vista, Otay Mesa, or east San Diego before heading to CBX. You’ll see Tesla Superchargers and CCS stations within about 5–10 miles of the border, while the airport-side options get described as “limited or nonexistent” in r/SanDiego threads. One user even asked if CBX had any chargers at all after not spotting a single unit in the main lot.

On the US side, a few private Otay Mesa parking lots advertise EV charging in their Google Maps listings, sometimes with photos of 2–4 Level 2 ports. Reviews, though, mention chargers being occupied or blocked for days, so you cannot assume you’ll plug in immediately on arrival. Some long‑term parkers report leaving a windshield note with a phone number so staff can call if they want to swap cars between chargers.

On the TIJ side, near the Main Terminal entrance, reports in r/tijuana say drivers usually park in the closest paid lot and treat it as a standard space, not a charging spot. One commenter flatly said they “wouldn’t count on charging on the TIJ side” and instead charges to at least 80–90% in San Diego or Otay before crossing.

Tip: Plan your charging around a DC fast session in San Diego County, then treat both TIJ and CBX parking next to the terminals as charge-free storage for multi-day trips.
