Bus

Bus Albania rarely run on exact timetables . No direct airport bus to most cities; you usually have to go into Tirana first and then change at the regional bus terminals

Flights landing in T1 at TIA don’t connect straight to Durrës

Intercity Coach Services from Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa (TIA) almost never run directly from the terminal. There is no through bus from T1 to cities like Durrës, Vlorë or Shkodër; you first ride into Tirana, then transfer at one of the city’s regional bus areas or roadside stops.

Expect a two-step trip if you want to move on the same day. First leg: airport to Tirana using a taxi or the Rinas Express bus to the city, which runs roughly every hour in daytime. Second leg: Tirana to your city (for example, Tirana–Durrës or Tirana–Shkodër), where daytime departures run fairly often but early-morning and late-evening options drop to a trickle.

Timetables in Albania are loose. Regulars report that intercity buses and furgons often leave when reasonably full, not at an exact printed time. That means no guaranteed connection from a landing at 15:10 to a bus “scheduled” for 16:00; that 16:00 coach might roll at 15:45 if every seat is taken, or 16:20 if it’s empty.

Prices are low compared with taxis, which is why backpackers still piece together these routes. You pay cash on board, usually just a few hundred lek for common runs like Tirana–Durrës (around 35 km). Minibuses fill up in summer and luggage often ends up in the aisle, so keep passports and valuables in a small bag on your lap.

Departures rarely leave from a single grand terminal. Reddit and TripAdvisor reports mention handwritten signs and multiple informal pickup points around Tirana, which gets tricky if you don’t speak Albanian. Many travellers ask their hotel or hostel to write the destination and correct bus area in Albanian to show drivers and touts.

Step-by-step: TIA to other Albanian cities by bus

  • 1. Land in T1 and clear arrivals; withdraw lek from an airport ATM for bus and taxi fares.
  • 2. Take the Rinas Express or a metered taxi from TIA to central Tirana; allow at least 45–60 minutes from wheels-down to reaching town.
  • 3. Head to the correct departure area for your route (for example, the Durrës-bound buses that leave from western Tirana); confirm “Durrës,” “Shkodër,” or your city name with drivers.
  • 4. Board the next departing bus or furgon, pay the conductor in cash, and expect flexible timing rather than a strict schedule.
  • 5. On arrival in your city, grab a local taxi from the roadside stop or small terminal to your accommodation.

One tip: build in at least a 2–3 hour buffer between landing at TIA and any onward coach you care about; better yet, overnight in Tirana, then pick up intercity buses fresh the next morning.
