Currency Exchange

Most flyers now change money in Tegucigalpa, not at TGU

Toncontín Airport (TGU) shifted to domestic-only operations after international flights moved to Palmerola (XPL) near Comayagua in late 2021, and recent traveller reports don’t confirm a functioning Currency Exchange counter in Terminal 1. If you’re arriving from San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, or Roatán, assume you may not find a staffed forex window in the terminal at all.

Because TGU now handles Honduran domestic traffic, frequent flyers on sites like FlyerTalk and Reddit say they handle currency before flying or in Tegucigalpa city, not at the airport. The usual pattern is ATMs in town or bank branches along Boulevard Morazán, about 6–8 km from TGU by taxi, instead of relying on any walk-up exchange desk in the building.

Toncontín’s small footprint means even if a Currency Exchange counter exists, it’s likely a single window landside near check-in rather than a large bank-branded setup. With no recent reviews mentioning rates, commissions, or opening hours, treat any posted rate board as a last-resort option and keep major swaps for banks where you can compare fees.

What regulars actually do now: they bring at least 500–1,000 HNL in cash from previous trips, pull more from ATMs in Tegucigalpa, and use cards for bigger spends. Tip: arrive with card-ready backup and don’t plan your only lempira stop around this unnamed Currency Exchange at TGU.
