Local Bus Route 1

Bus

Bus 30-45 min 3

EC$3 gets you from Argyle to Kingstown if you’re game

Local Bus Route 1 isn’t an airport bus in the formal sense; it’s the stream of private minibuses on the main road that locals use to go between Argyle International Airport (T) and Kingstown for about EC$3. Figure 30–45 minutes into town because the driver stops constantly to pick up and drop off.

There’s no stop inside the terminal area, so you walk 3–5 minutes out of the airport grounds to the main road in front of Argyle. Buses aren’t marked with “Route 1” signs in big letters, but you’re looking for white or colorful minibuses heading toward Kingstown, usually with loud music and a conductor sliding the side door open.

Daytime frequency is solid, with vans passing every few minutes during daylight hours, so waits around noon or mid-afternoon are usually under 10–15 minutes. After dark, reports say service drops off sharply, and late-night arrivals can end up waiting 30+ minutes or finding nothing at all.

The cost runs about EC$3 per person from the Argyle road into central Kingstown, paid in cash when you sit down or as you get off. Drivers and conductors much prefer small bills and coins; try to have EC$5 or EC$10 notes, not a fresh EC$100 from the ATM.

Minibuses fill up fast and drivers pack people in, so think tight benches, shoulder-to-shoulder, and music at club volume for 30–40 minutes. If you have big checked suitcases, some drivers either refuse you outright or quote an extra fee, while a small backpack or carry-on usually slides under the seat or on your lap for free.

How to ride Local Bus Route 1 from SVD, step by step

  • 1. Exit Arrivals in Terminal T, skip the taxi stand, and walk straight down the access road for about 300–400 meters to the main coastal road.
  • 2. Stand on the Kingstown-bound side of the road (ask “Kingstown side?” if unsure) and wait with locals; typical daytime wait is 5–15 minutes.
  • 3. When a minibus slows, beeps, or the conductor waves, shout “Kingstown?” and nod if they say yes; if not, let it pass and wait for the next one.
  • 4. Climb in quickly, grab any free seat, and keep your EC$3 fare ready in your hand or pocket; pass it forward if the conductor taps the roof or gestures.
  • 5. Watch for central Kingstown landmarks or ask the bus to drop you “in town”; rides are usually 30–45 minutes from the Argyle road, then you step off, grab your bag, and walk the last few blocks to your guesthouse.

One last tip: if your flight lands after about 18:00–19:00, budget for a taxi instead and save Local Bus Route 1 for your daylight runs between SVD and Kingstown.
