30–35 minutes from STL to downtown for about $2.50
MetroLink Red Line runs from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at St. Louis Lambert International Airport straight to downtown stops like Convention Center and Stadium. Trains typically take 30–35 minutes from the airport to central stations and run roughly every 12–20 minutes from about 4:00 until around midnight.
At the airport, follow signs for “MetroLink” near baggage claim in Terminal 1 or the garage connector in Terminal 2; both terminals sit directly on the Red Line branch, so you don’t choose between Red and Blue here. Buy a $2–3 ticket from the platform vending machines before boarding, then hold onto it in case of fare inspections on the 30-minute ride.
The ride to Convention Center Station, used by many conference hotels, clocks in at around half an hour, and Busch Stadium is one stop farther at Stadium Station. Many downtown hotels sit 2–5 blocks from these stations, so factor in an extra 5–10 minutes on foot, especially if you’re hauling a 50 lb checked bag in rain or summer heat.
Trains from the airport usually have open seats for most of the 30+ minute trip, even when cars get crowded closer to Civic Center during rush periods. The airport branch is all Red Line, so you stay on the same train until your downtown stop instead of worrying about mid-line transfers or color changes.
What regulars do: commuters and frequent flyers check Metro Transit’s service alerts or Twitter before trusting the Red Line for a tight connection, especially during planned track work. If they’re heading out after 21:00, some locals choose stations like Convention Center or Union Station instead of others they consider sketchier, then walk the last 3–4 blocks to their hotel.
Watch out for: evening and weekend track projects can add 10–20 minutes with single-tracking or shuttle buses between specific stations. Some riders say late-night trips through a few inner-city stops feel rough, so many avoid doing the airport ride with big bags close to the last trains around 23:30–24:00 and grab a rideshare instead.
One tip: build a 20–30 minute buffer for the return to STL, so you’re aiming to board the Red Line from downtown at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2 hours before international.
