Daily rentals at SPN start right outside the Main Terminal
Car rental desks sit in the arrivals area of Saipan International Airport’s Main Terminal, steps from baggage claim, so you see them as soon as you exit customs. Most counters track incoming flights and stay open for late-night arrivals, but if you land after 22:00 it’s still smart to have a confirmed reservation with your flight number attached.
Major brands and a few local companies operate here, typically offering compact sedans, small SUVs, and vans with automatic transmission, which matters on Saipan’s hilly roads. Daily base rates often start around $45–$60 for a compact, with insurance and taxes pushing a one-day total closer to $70–$90. Expect higher prices around Golden Week, Christmas, and local festival dates.
Pick-up and drop-off both happen in the same ground-side parking area directly in front of the Main Terminal, less than a 2–3 minute walk from the arrivals exit. Most agencies allow 24-hour returns using a key-drop box, but staff usually inspect the car during desk hours, often 08:00–18:00, before closing your contract. Fuel policy is usually “full to full,” and the nearest gas station sits about 4 km from the airport on the main road toward Garapan.
Driving from SPN to Garapan’s hotel strip usually takes 20–30 minutes to cover the roughly 12–15 km, depending on traffic and road work. Speed limits on main roads often sit around 35 mph (about 56 km/h), with lower limits in town sections and near schools. Parking at most beach hotels and guesthouses runs free, but day-use resorts may charge a posted fee of a few dollars for non-guests.
Saipan traffic is light compared with big cities, but two-lane roads and occasional tropical downpours slow things down, especially on the route north past the 7 km mark from Garapan toward scenic spots like Suicide Cliff. Cell coverage from major carriers reaches most of the island, yet offline maps help if you’re driving past the main coastal road around sunrise or after 21:00 when some shops close and streets get dark.
Practical tip: book a smaller car unless you truly need a van; on Saipan’s narrow side streets and the airport’s compact parking lot near the Main Terminal, a compact or small SUV is easier to park and usually $10–$20 cheaper per day than a minivan.
