10–15 minutes in a Lyft gets you to rail

John Wayne Airport (SNA) doesn’t sit on a rail line, but in about 10–15 minutes and roughly $15–$25 in rideshare, you can be at an Amtrak/Metrolink station instead of paying airport car-rental or shuttle rates. Trains from these nearby stations run up to Los Angeles Union Station, down to San Diego, and inland toward Riverside and San Bernardino on specific Metrolink lines.

Tustin Station: closest bet for Metrolink

Tustin Metrolink Station sits about 7 miles from SNA, usually a 12–18 minute rideshare depending on traffic on the 55 and Edinger. It’s on Metrolink’s Orange County Line and Inland Empire–Orange County Line, with weekday departures often every 30–60 minutes in peak periods. The station has paid parking, restrooms, and basic shelters, but no staffed ticket office; buy via the Metrolink mobile app or machines on the platform.

Irvine Station: better for longer Amtrak runs

Irvine Transportation Center is about 10–11 miles from SNA, typically a 15–20 minute ride via the 405 or 55/5. It’s served by Amtrak Pacific Surfliner plus Metrolink’s Orange County and Inland Empire–Orange County lines. You’ll see multiple daily Amtrak departures toward Los Angeles and San Diego, and the station building usually opens early morning (around 5:00 a.m.) and runs into the evening, with indoor seating and restrooms.

Santa Ana Station: historic depot with more connections

Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center (SARTC) sits roughly 8 miles northwest of SNA, generally 15–20 minutes away by car along the 55 or local streets like MacArthur and Grand. It’s on the same Amtrak Pacific Surfliner route and Metrolink Orange County/Inland Empire–Orange County lines, and also ties into OCTA local buses and some longer-distance coach routes. The depot has a staffed Amtrak counter during daytime hours and indoor waiting space.

How to pick a station and buy tickets

For Metrolink-only trips (for example SNA to LA Union Station on a weekday morning), most people choose Tustin because it’s closest at around 7 miles and usually the quickest drive. For Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Irvine and Santa Ana both see multiple daily trains; sample fares often run in the $20–$40 range to San Diego or LA, depending on time and advance purchase. Metrolink tickets are usually under $15 for SNA-area to downtown LA, bought via the Metrolink app or station TVMs.

One last-mile tip

Call your rideshare pickup from the SNA Ground Transportation Center on the lower level, then plug the exact station name (for example “Tustin Metrolink Station” on Edinger Avenue) into the app; this cuts down on wrong-drop issues and keeps your added transfer to about 10–20 minutes of car time before you hit the platform.

Step by step

  1. 01 Arrange for a taxi or rideshare to the nearest train station.
  2. 02 Choose between Irvine, Santa Ana, or Tustin stations.
  3. 03 Purchase your train ticket and board your train.
Watch out for
  • Underestimating travel time to the train station.
  • Not checking train schedules in advance.
