Five extra minutes for the Terminal B tram can save you 20 in comfort

Terminal B at SMF handles 19 gates and most of the airport’s traffic, including Southwest, Alaska, Frontier, and Spirit, out of the newer central building with the people mover to the long concourse. Check your boarding pass: if it says B, you’re using the “new” side with the tram ride between check-in and the gates. Compared with Terminal A, the ceilings are higher, the layout is cleaner, and it feels like the airport put its money here.

Security for Terminal B sits upstairs past the ticket counters, and several Google reviews peg Monday morning waits at 30–45 minutes around 6–8 a.m., especially before Southwest banks. The TSA PreCheck and priority entrance is on the far left of the checkpoint, separate from the main center queue. Regulars head there immediately; it’s easy to miss if you just follow the crowd toward the middle stanchions.

After security you board the automatic people mover out to the concourse, and the combo of waiting, the short ride, and then the walk to the far B gates runs 10–15 minutes if you just missed a tram. Factor that in if you land at, say, B1 and depart from a high B-teens gate. If you reach the platform alongside a crowd, some American and Alaska fliers say the stairwell down from the train platform beats waiting in the escalator line by a couple of minutes.

The concourse stretches a good distance; Southwest crowds the mid-B gates, so reviews call those boarding zones “packed” during peak hours, especially around Sunday evening returns. The far end, around the last several B gates, usually has more open seats and outlets, and frequent travelers walk the extra five minutes to plug in laptops. If you have a long layover, aim away from the central cluster where WN runs multiple turns back-to-back.

On food, Terminal B runs a full mix: Dos Coyotes Border Cafe and La Taqueria handle burritos and tacos, Panda Express covers fast Chinese, and Mountain Mikes Pizza sells whole pies and slices near the gates. Burgers and Brew gives you a sit-down burger and beer option, while Jack's Urban Eats and Freshii cover salads and bowls for around $10–$15 per person. Peet’s Coffee, Old Soul Co, and Jamba keep lines in the morning; plan 10 extra minutes at Peet’s during the 6–8 a.m. rush.

If you want a real meal before an evening departure, Esquire Grill and Iron Horse Tavern in B run fuller menus and a bar, and prices sit closer to $18–$25 for mains. Mountain Mikes, Dos Coyotes, and Burgers and Brew are common take-to-gate picks mentioned in reviews when flights go out around dinnertime. Regulars often grab food in the central food court, then walk toward the quieter far B gates to eat without fighting for a table.

Escape Lounge sits airside in Terminal B and works with several bank and airline access programs; walk time from the people mover is under 5 minutes if you stay near the central spine instead of dipping down side corridors. It’s the only full lounge in this terminal, so at 5–7 p.m. it can feel tight when multiple B departures overlap. Don’t burn an Escape visit on a 35-minute connection; it’s not worth the walk back and forth from far-out gates.

Shopping runs the usual names: Hudson and TravelMart for snacks and drinks, InMotion Entertainment and Tech on the Go for chargers and headphones, and Vineyard Marketplace if you want local wine as a carry-on. DOCO Market, Sactown Magazine Market, and Farm to Fork to Sky Market stock Sacramento-branded gear and food gifts, and several travelers mention The Gallery at SMF for last-minute art-forward souvenirs under $50. If you forgot toiletries, the Travel + Well kiosk plugs the gap with travel-sized basics.

Watch out for TSA lines that back almost to the doors in the early morning and on holiday weekends, which multiple reviewers flag as the worst times in Terminal B. Build the buffer: for Southwest and Alaska flights before 9 a.m. or on Sunday/Monday, arrive at least 2 hours ahead to absorb a 45-minute security line plus the 10–15 minutes out to the far B gates. One practical tip: after check-in, head straight upstairs, hug the far-left side to find the priority/PreCheck entrance, then eat and shop after you’re past the tram.
