Thirteen gates, one straight pier: Terminal A is SMF’s older workhorse

Thirteen gates sit off a single concourse in Terminal A, mostly handling United and Delta plus American on the side. This is the “old UA/DL pier” regulars talk about: smaller footprint than B, more worn finishes, but quicker to figure out. If you like short walks and simple layouts over art installations and trams, this building is the one you want.

The security checkpoint for Terminal A is right at its own entrance on Airport Blvd, with the priority lane built directly into that line. Frequent flyers on United say early-morning security here usually runs 20–25 minutes from curb to gate around 6–7 a.m., compared with 30+ minutes they see in Terminal B. If you have PreCheck or priority, use it in A instead of trekking over to B’s far-left priority queue.

Once you clear security, the concourse stretches in a straight line toward the end gates, all post-security. Gates A1–A4 sit closer to the main cluster of food and shops, while the higher-numbered gates at the far end stay a bit quieter. Regulars who fly out of A two or three times a month say they time it with a 90-minute arrival before morning departures, versus the 2 hours they give themselves when they’re stuck in B.

Starbucks anchors the central hub near the mid-concourse gates, and that’s exactly where seating gets tight during the morning rush of United and Delta flights. Expect a line for coffee at 6–8 a.m. and be ready to walk toward the higher gates if every seat near the store is taken. Prices are standard airport Starbucks: think around $5–7 for espresso drinks and breakfast sandwiches.

Sbarro handles quick hot food closer to the middle of the pier, with the usual pizza slices and pasta plates in the $8–15 range. It’s fast enough between banks of departures, but quality comments are mixed, so treat it as a “I need something now before boarding at A8” option. If your flight boards out of a far gate like A11–A13, grab food here first so you’re not backtracking.

Vino Volo in Terminal A works as both a wine bar and a quieter sit-down spot, usually opening around the first wave of midday flights and running into the evening. Expect California-focused wines by the glass in the $12–18 range and small plates that beat the heat-lamp options elsewhere in the pier. If you have time before a late-day United departure, grabbing a stool here near the mid-gate area is usually a calmer move than camping by Starbucks.

The Escape Lounge for Terminal A sits airside and takes Priority Pass and American Express Platinum, with day passes available in the roughly $40–50 range when capacity allows. It’s not huge, so it fills during the morning Delta and United banks, but it’s a solid upgrade over the cramped public seating by the main holdrooms. Don’t burn a quick 35-minute layover here; you want at least an hour to make the food and drinks worth it.

Shopping runs along the concourse spine: a Hudson and Capitol Books combo has magazines, books, and snacks; See’s Candies sells boxed chocolates by the pound; InMotion Entertainment stocks headphones, chargers, and travel tech; Airport Wireless handles phones and accessories; @ease/Popsox and The Well cover last-minute gifts and socks. If you forgot a cable, InMotion and Airport Wireless usually sit nearer the central gates, so hit them before hiking down to the quiet end of the pier.

Regulars swear by walking all the way to the end gates when they need a power outlet or breathing room; reviewers say you can usually find unused plugs by A11–A13 even when the seats near Starbucks are full. The trade-off is walking back a few minutes once your United or Delta flight boards from a mid-range gate like A6 or A7. Tip: build a 5-minute “walk-back tax” into your mental boarding time if you camp at the far end.
