South Economy Lot

Long stay

Holiday rush, full signs at East and West Economy, then South opens.

South Economy Lot runs $12 per 24-hour period and usually comes into play when the main East and West Economy areas start filling up around big travel weeks. It sits south of the airport roadway system, grouped by SMF with the other Economy lots as long-stay, shuttle-only parking. Think of it as the extra row that gets opened when Sacramento hits Thanksgiving or Christmas levels of demand.

All Economy sections at SMF, including South, sit farthest from Terminals A and B, with no pedestrian walkway. That means you rely on the shuttle system from the moment you park. Official guidance says to pad your time because these shuttles are the only way in and out from South, unlike the Daily lot where you can walk. For longer trips of 3–7 days, the lower $12 daily rate can still beat rideshares both ways.

Shuttles for the Economy lots typically run about every 25–30 minutes, and the airport tells drivers to allow up to 30 extra minutes just for parking and shuttle transfer. That matters on early departures before 8:00 a.m. and during Sunday evening arrivals when everyone returns at once. Build that half-hour into your TSA timing for both Terminal A and Terminal B, since the same shuttle loop feeds both sides.

Regular SMF flyers on forums say they aim for East or West Economy first, only heading to South or any overflow section when they see those “Lot Full” signs on peak days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. If you’re driving in on a major holiday weekend and expect South to be in play, one practical tip: plan your arrival at least 45–60 minutes before boarding time, not departure time, to absorb shuttle waits and a possible line at security.
