EC$2.50 beats any taxi fare to central Castries
The Local Bus Route to Castries runs as part of Saint Lucia’s shared minibus system, not an airport shuttle. From George F. L. Charles Airport (SLU), you walk about 3–5 minutes out to the main road by the Vigie playing field and flag a bus heading into downtown Castries. Fares sit around EC$2.50–EC$3 per person in cash, paid directly to the driver when you board or just before you get off.
Buses here are 14–16 seat minibuses with green license plates that start with “M” and usually display “Castries” on a sign in the front window. They run throughout the day, typically from around 6:00 to 19:00, with no published timetable and gaps of 5–20 minutes depending on traffic and how quickly they fill. The ride from SLU to the center of Castries takes about 5–10 minutes along the coastal road.
To catch the bus from SLU, exit the small terminal, walk past the car park to the main road (John Compton Highway), and wait on the airport side, facing in the direction of Castries Cruise Port and the central market. The distance from the terminal door to the roadside is roughly 200–300 meters, mostly on flat pavement. You pay in Eastern Caribbean dollars; drivers rarely accept US bills for a single EC$2.50 ride, so hit an ATM or currency desk before heading out.
Light luggage works best here: a backpack or a single small carry-on that can sit on your lap or between your legs. Minibus aisles are narrow, and during school and office rush hours (around 7:00–9:00 and 15:00–17:30) every one of those 14–16 seats tends to fill. Rolling a 23 kg checked bag into a packed bus at 16:30 from SLU to Jeremie Street Bus Terminal in Castries will not win you fans.
There’s nothing specific to order or avoid, but you can pick your seat: grab a spot near the front if you get motion sick; the road between SLU and Castries Market is short yet can feel jerky in stop‑and‑go traffic. If you’re heading to a guesthouse near Derek Walcott Square, ask the driver for “Castries Market” and walk the last 300–500 meters from the Jeremie Street drop-off.
Practical tip: Keep exact change (EC$1 and EC$2 coins plus EC$5 notes) ready before you board so you’re not digging in your wallet while the driver threads through Castries traffic with a full load of 14–16 passengers.
