VTA Route 60

Bus

Bus 20–25 min SJC–Berryessa BART; ~15–20 min SJC–Santa Clara Caltrain $2.50

$2.50 gets you from SJC to rail: that’s Route 60

On VTA Route 60 you pay $2.50 and ride straight from SJC’s Terminal A and Terminal B stops to either Santa Clara Caltrain or Berryessa/North San José BART. Figure 15–20 minutes to Santa Clara station and about 20–25 minutes to Berryessa if traffic on 101 and 880 isn’t wrecked. For solo travellers or airport staff, this is the sub-$3 alternative to a $30–$40 Lyft.

The bus stops sit curbside outside Terminal A and Terminal B, clearly signed as “VTA 60,” and the route runs roughly every 15 minutes in the daytime and around every 30 minutes late evening. You pay on board with cash or Clipper; exact change means $2.50, and you can get a paper transfer if you need another VTA bus. First timers: make sure the headsign says “60 Milpitas BART via Airport” or “60 Winchester via Airport” so you’re not boarding the wrong direction.

From SJC to Santa Clara Caltrain, most runs clock in at around 15–20 minutes, then Caltrain can take you up to San Francisco in another 60–90 minutes depending on all-stops vs Baby Bullet. Riders on r/bayarea constantly point out this combo—Route 60 plus Caltrain—as the cheapest SJC→SF option: roughly $2.50 for the bus and under $10–$12 for the train instead of $35+ for rideshare.

The SJC to Berryessa BART leg usually runs 20–25 minutes but can creep longer when the freeway ramps clog, especially near the 101/880 tangle. Several transit nerds on r/bart and r/sanjose complain that real-world timing can miss the schedule by 5–10 minutes, which matters when you’re trying to hit a specific Orange or Green Line BART train toward Milpitas, Oakland, or downtown SF.

Service officially comes every 15 minutes most of the day, but multiple locals note that after roughly 10–11 p.m. you’re looking at gaps closer to 25–30 minutes between Airport and Berryessa trips. Miss a bus at 11:05 p.m. and you might watch the next hourly Caltrain or a less-frequent late-night BART slip away while you sit at Santa Clara or Berryessa.

Crowding is real: r/sanjose calls out rush-hour Airport–Berryessa–Milpitas runs as “a zoo,” with half the bus full of roller bags and half full of commuters. Expect a full load on weekday mornings around 7–9 a.m. and evenings 4–7 p.m.; loading big suitcases through the front door can be stressful even if you snag one of the forward-facing seats near the luggage racks.

How to ride VTA Route 60 from SJC (step-by-step)

  • 1. Exit to the curb at your terminal. From Terminal A baggage claim, walk out to the center island where the “VTA 60” sign stands near the other bus bays; from Terminal B, follow ground transportation signs to the marked VTA stop just past the rideshare area.
  • 2. Check direction and destination. For Berryessa BART and Milpitas, board buses signed “60 Milpitas BART via Airport”; for Santa Clara Caltrain and Winchester, board “60 Winchester via Airport”—both directions physically stop at the airport loop, so read the headsign.
  • 3. Pay your $2.50 fare when boarding. Tap a Clipper card at the reader or hand the driver $2.50 in exact cash; if you need another VTA route later, ask for a transfer as they print it when you pay.
  • 4. Ride 15–20 minutes to Santa Clara or 20–25 to Berryessa. For Caltrain, get off at “Santa Clara Transit Center” after roughly 4–6 intermediate stops; for BART, stay on until “Berryessa/North San José BART” after the airport, Montague, and a handful of local stops.
  • 5. Connect to rail, watching the clock. At Santa Clara, Caltrain peak headways can be 30–60 minutes; at Berryessa, BART daytime trains can run every 15 minutes. Regulars time their Route 60 departure so they hit a Baby Bullet at Santa Clara or frequent BART at Berryessa instead of sitting on the platform.

One last tip: if a Route 60 has just pulled away from Terminal A or B, some locals walk to the first stop outside the airport loop on Airport Boulevard and sometimes catch the same bus again three to five minutes later instead of waiting a full 15–30 minutes.
