Dh3–Dh8 gets you from T1 to central Sharjah

The Sharjah Airport–Sharjah City Bus is the ultra-budget move from T1 if you’re solo, not in a rush, and landing in daytime or early evening. Fares typically sit in the Dh3–Dh8 range depending on route and distance, which is a fraction of the roughly Dh50–Dh70 you’d pay for a taxi to central Sharjah.

From arrivals in Terminal 1, you walk about 150–250 meters outside to the signed public bus stands near the main car park. Buses run to central Sharjah areas like Rolla and Al Jubail, with advertised headways often around 20–30 minutes in the day, but travellers report real-world gaps can be longer, especially in off-peak or late evening.

Pay with small cash in dirhams; don’t count on a card reader working or staff having change for a Dh200 note. City buses in Sharjah are basic, front-door boarding vehicles with standard forward-facing seats and standing room, and the ride covers roughly 10–15 km into town depending on your stop.

Traffic is the real wildcard: guides and expat blogs mention that what looks like a 15–20 minute hop on the map can stretch past 45–60 minutes in rush hour along the routes between Sharjah Airport and busy districts like Rolla. One traveller flat-out said the buses are “extremely cheap but can take ages in rush hour compared to a taxi,” so don’t pair this with a tight onward schedule.

Timetables at the stop can be out of date, and there’s usually no reliable real-time display, so you may wait 10 minutes or you may wait closer to 40. Services thin out late at night, and after around 22:00–23:00 you’re increasingly rolling the dice on how long you’ll stand at the curb versus just taking a metered taxi from the rank 50 meters away.

Step-by-step from arrivals

  • 1. Clear immigration and customs in T1 and exit into the public arrivals hall on Level 0.
  • 2. Use an ATM near the arrivals exit to pull out at least Dh20 in small notes; aim for Dh10s and Dh5s for the bus fare.
  • 3. Follow the “Bus / Public Transport” signs and walk 3–5 minutes (about 150–250 meters) outside toward the main car park and bus bays.
  • 4. Check the posted route boards for buses heading to central areas like Rolla or Al Jubail and confirm the destination with the driver before boarding.
  • 5. Pay the driver in cash (around Dh3–Dh8), keep the paper ticket, and grab a seat near the front if you want to watch for your stop.
  • 6. Use an offline map on your phone to track progress over the 10–15 km ride and ring the stop button a block early once you see your landmark.

Tip: if you land during peak traffic (roughly 16:00–20:00) and value time over saving Dh40–Dh60, skip the bus and head straight for the taxi rank just outside T1.
