Sendai Airport Railroad

Train

Train 25 min

17-minute rapid trains run straight from the terminal into Sendai

The Sendai Airport Railroad (Sendai Airport Transit) runs from the station built directly into Terminal 1/2 up to JR Sendai Station in about 17–25 minutes. Trains are fully inside the JR network, so this is the default move if you’re heading to central Sendai or making a Tohoku Shinkansen connection upstairs at JR Sendai.

From the arrivals floor, you’re about 3–5 minutes walk from the airport station via signed passages linked to Terminals 1 and 2. No shuttle bus, no street crossings, just straight into the station concourse to buy a ticket or tap an IC card before heading down to the island platform.

There are two stopping patterns: the rapid service takes around 17 minutes to JR Sendai, and the all-stops local takes about 25 minutes. Many timetable apps show only the slower timing, so check the departure board for trains labeled “rapid” if you’re racing a Shinkansen departure time.

Regular tickets between Sendai Airport and JR Sendai Station price out similarly to other JR suburban runs in Miyagi, and the line is fully compatible with IC cards like Suica and PASMO. If you hold a national or regional JR rail pass that covers the Sendai area, this leg usually slots in under the same JR rules, which saves you a separate bus or taxi fare into town.

Locals on TripAdvisor point out that these trains double as a commuter line to Natori, so cars can fill with office workers during weekday rush hours despite the short 17–25 minute distance. One long-running review even complains that “hardly anyone going to the airport uses it,” so don’t expect a dedicated-airport-train vibe or guaranteed seats at 08:00 and 18:00.

Older reviews grumble that life was easier when there was a direct airport shuttle bus instead of this rail link, but the current setup removes one whole transfer. You roll your suitcase off the plane, walk roughly 200–300 meters inside the terminal, and drop straight onto a JR train that gets you to the main Sendai hub without touching a road.

Practical tip: if you have a tight Shinkansen connection at JR Sendai, aim for a rapid airport train and build at least 20 minutes at Sendai Station to get up from the airport platform to the Shinkansen gates.
