Car rental

Landing after 21:00 and heading beyond San Pedro Sula?

On-site car rentals at Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) sit directly at the terminal, so you can walk from baggage claim to a counter in under 5 minutes and skip haggling for taxis outside. This works well if you’re driving on to places like Tela, Copán Ruinas, La Ceiba, or smaller towns with limited late-night transport.

The rental desks operate inside the arrivals area, just past customs, and most international brands keep hours roughly aligned with the main bank of flights, often from around 07:00 until at least the last scheduled arrival in the evening. Because SAP is smaller than Tegucigalpa, the number of desks is limited, and at least 2–3 agencies may share the same compact lobby zone by the exit doors.

Pricing swings a lot: base rates that look like US$25–35 per day online can jump to US$50+ per day once you add mandatory Honduran insurance at the counter. Expect a hold on your credit card in the hundreds of dollars, often US$500–1,000 depending on category, and bring a physical card since many desks refuse virtual-only numbers or debit cards for security deposits.

Most agencies stock small sedans and compact SUVs as their main SAP fleet, with only a handful of true 4x4s or vans available on any given day. If you’re planning to reach mountain towns, rural sites, or unpaved routes beyond Cortés department, book an SUV or 4x4 class in advance and confirm the vehicle category in writing 24–48 hours before your flight.

Driving out of SAP, the access road feeds directly to main arteries like CA-5 and the route toward La Lima, so you’re on the highway within about 10 minutes of leaving the parking lot. Factor in 15–20 minutes from landing to reaching the rental counter if you’re on an international flight, including immigration and baggage, and another 15–30 minutes for paperwork and vehicle inspection before you exit the airport perimeter.

Tip: Take detailed photos of the car at pickup in the SAP parking lot, including fuel gauge and odometer, and ask the agent to note every scratch on the paper contract before you drive the first meter.
