Cell Phone Lot

Waiting area

Free for 1 hour at 2311 McCain Road

This is SAN’s Cell Phone Lot: a free staging area with a strict 1-hour limit, set just off Harbor Drive at 2311 McCain Road. It’s not overnight parking and not for leaving your car while you fly; it’s only for drivers waiting on arriving passengers from Terminals 1 and 2. Think of it as a holding pad so you don’t circle the loop or get waved away by curbside police.

Daily rate is $0 because you’re not actually “parking” here long term, you’re queuing. There’s no shuttle, no tickets, and no need to pull a stub—just pull in, park, and head out once your passenger texts that they’re at arrivals. The drive from the lot to either terminal usually runs just a few minutes, but evening arrival banks and Harbor Drive traffic can stretch that out.

Amenity level is near zero: reviews call it “basically a big free parking lot,” with minimal or no bathrooms and no food options, so don’t plan to wait a full 60 minutes with kids and no supplies. The main tools regulars use here are their phones: they track flight status on apps, watch for “bags on belt,” then roll to the curb so they aren’t idling for 20 minutes in front of Terminal 2.

Complaints focus on crowding and behavior, not pricing. Drivers point out that some people ignore the 1-hour rule and semi-camp, which can make the lot feel packed, especially in the 6–10 p.m. window. Others mention aggressive merges and confusion at the exit when a bunch of cars bolt at once after an arrival bank lands.

Tip: Have your passenger text from baggage claim, stay put in the lot until they’re curbside, then budget 10–15 minutes for the Harbor Drive run during rush hour.
