Intercity Direct when minutes actually matter
If you’re landing at Rotterdam The Hague Airport’s T1 and then heading for a long‑haul or premium cabin flight out of Amsterdam Schiphol, NS Intercity Direct only really pays off when those 10–15 minutes you save between Rotterdam Centraal and Schiphol count. The train itself never comes to RTM; you first take RET bus 33 from the terminal door to Rotterdam Centraal in about 20–25 minutes, then switch to Intercity Direct on the mainline.
From Rotterdam Centraal, Intercity Direct runs roughly every 15–30 minutes to Schiphol and Amsterdam, with the non‑stop stretch to Schiphol taking about 25 minutes. Standard IC trains on the same route are only about 10–15 minutes slower, which is why most RTM arrivals don’t bother with the supplement and just sit on the regular IC. If your inbound to RTM is tight and your long‑haul out of AMS is on KLM or another fixed‑ticket carrier, those minutes can be the difference between a calm check‑in and a sprint.
Intercity Direct between Rotterdam Centraal and Schiphol needs a small surcharge on top of the normal NS fare, currently a few euros per person in 2nd class. You tap in with an OV‑chipkaart or contactless bank card at Rotterdam Centraal, then the surcharge is added automatically when your journey includes the high‑speed segment. Paper tickets from NS vending machines in the concourse under the main platforms also carry the supplement if you select the high‑speed option.
There is no check‑in or airline desk link between RTM and Intercity Direct; your luggage stays with you from T1 baggage claim, onto RET bus 33, and then onto the train. The bus stop sits just outside the RTM terminal, and bus 33 usually runs every 10–15 minutes in daytime. Count 45–60 minutes door‑to‑door from RTM to Schiphol platforms if connections line up cleanly, and add another 15–20 minutes as buffer for queues or delays.
Use Intercity Direct mainly if you care about shaving 10–15 minutes off the Rotterdam–Schiphol leg and already have a tight long‑haul schedule locked in from Amsterdam. Everyone else is usually better off riding the regular IC from Rotterdam Centraal and putting the supplement money toward food in the Schiphol terminal instead.
