Caribou Coffee

Gate-side caffeine fix near RIC Concourse in Terminal 1

Caribou Coffee sits just past security in Terminal 1 at Richmond International, easy to hit on the way to any gate. Hours shift with flight banks, but morning flyers usually see it open well before the first 6:00–6:30 a.m. departures. It’s a true airport kiosk setup, so think grab-and-go over lounge-style seating, with only a few nearby chairs and typical concourse tables.

Standard Caribou menu shows up here: hot and iced coffee, espresso drinks, and seasonal specials, plus a small lineup of baked goods. Expect airport pricing, so a basic brewed coffee lands around $3–$4, and lattes slide closer to $5–$7 depending on size and extras. Food runs to wrapped breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and pastries that heat up quickly, good for a 20-minute boarding window.

Espresso-based drinks at this RIC outpost lean sweet, especially the Caramel High Rise and Campfire Mocha; if that’s not your thing, stick to a medium dark-roast drip or a simple Americano. Cold brew is usually on tap and handles long layovers better than a watery iced coffee. For something small before an 8 a.m. flight, one pastry and a medium drink will usually hit around $9–$11 total.

Lines spike hard in the 5:30–8:00 a.m. rush when multiple Delta, American, and United departures cluster, and again around the 3:00–5:00 p.m. bank. With a single register and one barista on slower days, a short-looking line can still run 10–15 minutes. Mobile ordering isn’t consistent here, so plan to stand physically in line if you want a latte before a 40-minute connection.

Practical tip: if you see more than six people ahead of you at Caribou and your boarding time is under 20 minutes away, skip the custom espresso drink and order brewed coffee or bottled beverages instead; they pour in under a minute and still beat the on-board coffee.
