Azul hub traffic, 16 gates, one long T1 concourse

All 16 boarding gates at Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International share a single T1 concourse, with Azul using the airport as its main hub in Brazil’s Northeast and funneling both domestic and international flights through the same passenger terminal. Azul, Gol, and LATAM Brasil all operate from this one building, so you never have to change terminals for a connection, just walk airside between gates.

T1 runs on 64 shared check-in counters in the main hall, and peak Azul banks can stack up long lines, especially for early-morning departures around 05:00–07:00. Check-in and bag drop for Azul, Gol, and LATAM sit in the same general area, so always look for the specific airline logos above the counters before queuing. If you’re on separate tickets, don’t cut it close: counters can be busy and staff shift toward the gate area as boarding nears.

Security sits just beyond the main check-in floor and feeds straight into the single concourse, with all 16 gates off the same airside corridor. Domestic and international departures use the same general flow, with passport control added only for international segments. On a normal day, plan 20–30 minutes from curb to gate if you already have a boarding pass, and add extra buffer in high season or during weekend Azul banks.

Subway sits airside and treats REC like a standard mall outlet, with 15–30 BRL sandwiches giving you something predictable if you’re trying to eat before a late flight. For quick coffee, Café São Braz in the departures level serves local-style espresso and pão de queijo from early morning through evening, handy if you land on a red-eye and need caffeine before a regional hop. Expect counter-service speed and tight table space near the main gate corridor.

Bob’s operates in the departures area as the main burger option, with combo meals typically around 30–40 BRL, and it stays busy around midday flight waves. Casa do Pão de Queijo is worth a stop for a basic Brazilian snack run, selling stuffed pão de queijo, salgados, and soft drinks within a short walk of multiple gates. If your layover is under one hour, these two spots are the fastest bets compared with waiting for a full plated meal.

Spoleto and Giraffas both sit in the terminal’s food court zone, offering pasta and Brazilian grill-style plates respectively, and they make more sense for longer connections of 90 minutes or more. Giraffas usually has the heartier rice-and-meat dishes, while Spoleto leans on customizable pasta bowls that run roughly 30–45 BRL depending on toppings. Lines spike when several Azul and Gol departures are called at once, so scan the departure boards before committing to a sit-down order.

Vivenda do Camarão brings seafood into the mix, focusing on shrimp dishes that can pair well with an evening beer before a late LATAM or Azul departure. Portions there run higher in price than the fast-food counters, but you get a slower, restaurant-style service right in T1. If you’re hungry and your gate is in the mid-teens, factor in a 5–10 minute walk back to boarding, as the concourse stretches more than it first appears.

There are currently no catalogued airline lounges in T1 at REC, so even frequent flyers on Azul, Gol, or LATAM stick to the public seating and food court. Power outlets are not at every seat, so many regulars cluster near columns and walls for charging while watching the screens for their gate changes. If you want a quieter spot, look toward the higher-numbered gates, where seating pockets can be emptier between the big Azul waves.

A FlyerTalk report notes that some staff leave the check-in counters early to work departing flights, which can make last-minute issues on separate tickets stressful. If you need ticket changes or thru-check questions sorted, aim to hit the desk at least 90 minutes before departure, not during the final boarding call. One practical move at REC: print or download every boarding pass you can before arriving, then head straight for security and use the time saved to eat near your actual gate, not in the main hall.
