Starbucks

T1 $$$$

6:30 a.m. departures out of T1 usually mean Starbucks.

In Shanghai Pudong’s older T1, there really aren’t many international coffee chains, so this Starbucks becomes the default stop before early China Eastern (MU) flights. It sits in Terminal 1 with a basic menu and price tier at the low end for the airport, but still more expensive than downtown Shanghai stores by a noticeable margin on each drink.

There are typically two locations in play for T1 flyers: one landside near the main check-in counters and another airside closer to the gates used by MU and other carriers. Regulars on FlyerTalk say they grab a latte or Americano landside before security to skip the heavier queues that build airside around the 7:00–9:00 a.m. departure bank.

Expect standard Starbucks drinks rather than much local experimentation: hot lattes, Americanos, cappuccinos, and usually a few seasonal options on the board. Prices run higher than in the city; think an extra 5–10 RMB on a medium latte compared with a central Shanghai store on Nanjing Road. Food is the usual pastries and sandwiches in a small case, enough to tide you over on a short regional hop out of T1.

Lines stretch 10–20 minutes in the morning, and several travelers report staff having trouble with complex English drink tweaks like “half caf, extra hot, no foam.” If you care about details, keep it simple: size, hot or iced, one or two add-ons. Multiple Reddit users also mention foreign cards and overseas Starbucks apps failing, so have cash or a local option like UnionPay, Alipay, or WeChat Pay ready.

One practical play: if your T1 flight leaves before 10:00 a.m., hit the landside Starbucks right after check-in, then head through security with your drink instead of gambling on longer airside lines and payment hiccups at the gate-side store.
